Also in 2008, AH Kraken was good and I warmed up to Thee Oh Sees.  Portishead and Nick Cave reaffirmed that they still matter.

agreed.  i saw Thee Oh Sees at Goner, my first TOS live show, and i loved it.  i didnt buy a record though, and i regret it.

I recently got to see Thee Ohsees and Intelligence do a combined set- taking turns doing songs and collaborating on some. Ohsees did Block of Ice and Intelligence did their version right after. It was a dream come true. Too bad it was in Fargo, North Dakota on a Sunday and there were only seven people out to see them.

My biggest reluctance regarding Thee Oh Sees was that I really, really liked The Coachwhips and wish they were still around, even if their effective schtick was "done".

But I got over it.   ;D

I've listened to less new music this year than ever, but two standouts have been Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down's We Brave Bee Stings and All and Tim Fite's Fair Ain't Fair.

also, Mogwai's new one and that last Walkmen. And that Langhorne Slim album.

Just a quick point about Fab Four Suture by Stereolab; it's not really an album as such and more a complilation of 10"s they did. Umm, I think the new record is the best thing they have put out since Dots and Loops way back 1997 or 1998 I think. Just a great band really, can't wait to catch them in December.

A lot of these are reissues, and I'm trusting iTunes to be right about the year:

The Black Hollies - Casting Shadows
The Black Keys - Attack & Release
Big Dipper - Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology
Cheap Time - st
Crystal Stilts - st
David Byrne/Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
The Dirtbombs - We Have You Surrounded
Jay Reatard - Singles 06/07
Santogold - st
Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 - st
Sir Victor Uwaifo - Guitar Boy Superstar: 1970-76
TL/Rx - Rapid Response EP
Willie Nelson - Stardust (Legacy Edition)
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

This is about it for '08 so far:

Bon Iver – For Emma Forever Ago
Vivian Girls – s/t
Bonnie Prince Billy – Lie Down in the Light
Max Richter – 24 Postcards in Full Colour
Q-Tip – The Renaissance
Cheap Time – s/t
about three songs from Portishead - Third

Reissues:
Arthur Russell – Love is Overtaking Me
Group Inerane – Guitars From Agadez
African Scream Contest
Jay Reatard – Singles 06-07 (but not 08)
Supreme Genius of King Khan & The Shrines
Plus what I’ve heard of the Nigeria Special comps

I also liked "Honey" by Erykah Badu

Dirtbombs album was kind of a letdown, except for "Everlovin' Man."

My top 10 is almost done. I fear absolute ridicule from the FoTs as I'm still a relative newcomer on the boards (and my listening tastes vary quite a bit from I'd say about 90% of everybody here...). But I have been thinking this topic over for a while now. To be posted soon!

Just looking at the lists so far, there is a fair amount of variation. So far of the 40 or so albums that have been listed so far, at least 10 are from artists I don't care for. I imagine most people feel the same way...I also imagine my list will be the only one that includes the Nada Surf album that came out this year. I doubt much ridicule will be put to type for anyones list, though very possibly it will be thought by readers.

Overall, though, I don't think 08 was a very good year for music or movies. I look at all the lists and they seem kind of poor.

I couldn't pull a top 10 movie or album list out of my butt if I tried, not from this year. That's not to say I haven't seen movies this year I really liked or heard some good albums, but not 10 in either case. Not yet at least - although there's a new Fall Out Boy record coming out next week!  :o
