The YYY's did one of the most pathetic, pandering things I can think of, playing the new song then the MASSIVE old hit.  Trying to link both things together in our minds.  "So, who's this band again?  OH!  THOSE GUYS!  MAPS, THAT'S RIGHT!"  Weakass move. 

And that new song....oh boy.  What a dooooozy.  What a gross steaming dooooozy. 

Last night's show was a total dud.  They need to have the Rock, Alec B., and Doogie Houser, in that order, week after week.

That may be, but it doesn't make it right.  The band looked bored (or rather more concerned with their hair and dance moves than the songs), and it was a weak, barely there run-thru of their one and only hit. 

If Elvis Costello or Neil Young or any Tom Petty or any other number of bands that put out more than, say, 4 albums plays some 'deep cuts', good on 'em.  When fashionistas who will barely be a blip on the cultural radar in 10 years do it, it's completely inauthentic. 

Everyone likes that song?  Really?  I need to reevaluate it, apparently.

This is an example of what I have always called "Carsyndrome." I was in college when the first Cars album was released, and it was massive on college radio for about three weeks; then commercial radio starting playing "My Best Friend's Girl", and it was a strong success, and suddenly college radio hipsters were offended if you suggested they ever like the Cars. You would literally see the noses point upwards. Happened with U2 as well.

Yeah, real artistic credibility on SNL is all about making a statement.  Like when Men Without Hats played "Cocoricci (Le Tango des Voleurs)" instead of "The Safety Dance" in early '83.

The audience hated it, but those dudes kept their fucking integrity at 10.

The Blah Blah Blah's new song was, simply put, abysmal.  I honestly got more enjoyment out of Taylor Swift, another artist about whom I know very little, than that abortion of a song that the YYY's played. 

Trying to cover that up with the older song that is, admittedly, much catchier and has a vague adornment of a chorus/verse/tension, was cheap.  People like the song?  That is super great--when I like a song I obviously want to hear a band play it, sometimes ad nauseum.  But this one, ick.  Just icky. 

NOW if, by some stroke of magic, Dinosaur Jr. plays SNL this summer, you better believe I'll EXPECT to hear an older tune.  They've earned that by not sucking too much.  This, of course, will never be the case. 

I look forward to seeing a rock band on SNL that's really great sometime in the future.  I hope for this.

Who do we get? Fleet Foxes (Poco).  YYY's (BAD Blondie).  Kanye West (weirdo pop, I guess). 

I WANTS THE ROCK.  It's double gnarly as in the pre-internet/pre-cable days (or when cable was, like, 8 channels for us in NoDak) SNL was the only place I got to see new music.  There were several bands that sorta blew my mind years ago--I hope some other little kid gets that once in a while.  I guess they got myspace for that now.

It pertains to the thread.  Not sure what's stupid about "this train of thought" in particular, but that's a message board for ya. 

That said, it's nice to have discourse in any area of your life.  Makes it less mundane.

Yah, reminds me of Todd Ruundgren's show of integrity when I saw him in concert, and he did 13 songs from an album that was not yet released, a song by The Call, and a song by Red Ryder.

I am still pissed about the 4 songs he did that he is known for. Sell-out!
