The whole thing was just so awkward, all the way around. I like Josh Brolin, I think he might have a slim chance of filling a Heath Ledger kind of niche, but when he tries to be funny he looks like it could switch directly into anger at the drop of a hatch. The fartface sketch was well written, and Brolin actually pulled it off, but stuck in on the tail end of all that other uncomfortableness, the reception was expectedly horrid. Last night, even MacGruber was off, when I usually love most everything Will Forte does!
In part I blame the inflated credibility lent to it by 30 Rock and Weekend Update Thursday when it's not entirely deserved, and also blame those shows for just generally diluting the SNL stock (whatever is left of that). I still watch it if I can, because by all rights it should be amazing and sometimes still can be, but who isn't disappointed by SNL more often than not? I mean come on.
