last night's SNL
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:54:07 AM »
Did anyone catch the final handful of sketches ("Fall Leaves", "Underground" and "Fart Face")? There wasn't one laugh from the audience in either of the three. Was it all just filler?

I thought Fart Face was really well written, it reminded me of a KiTH style sketch. I'm pretty sure people laughed just at the word fart too.

The other 2 were pretty weak though, I agree.

Fartface was one of those where I was waiting for the next notch on it and it never really got there.

Forte definitely looked like Dave Foley as the AT & Love boss.

People at home, maybe. The studio audience was (understandably) icily quiet.

I was stone-faced for pretty much the whole hour and a half, but I agree that the last three bits were particularly unfunny.

The whole thing was just so awkward, all the way around. I like Josh Brolin, I think he might have a slim chance of filling a Heath Ledger kind of niche, but when he tries to be funny he looks like it could switch directly into anger at the drop of a hatch. The fartface sketch was well written, and Brolin actually pulled it off, but stuck in on the tail end of all that other uncomfortableness, the reception was expectedly horrid. Last night, even MacGruber was off, when I usually love most everything Will Forte does!

In part I blame the inflated credibility lent to it by 30 Rock and Weekend Update Thursday when it's not entirely deserved, and also blame those shows for just generally diluting the SNL stock (whatever is left of that). I still watch it if I can, because by all rights it should be amazing and sometimes still can be, but who isn't disappointed by SNL more often than not? I mean come on.

Ben Affleck as Keith Olbermann was freaking hilarious.

Yuck, really? He was mumbling and that impression was so bad I couldn't understand what the fuck he was saying.

I don't think he did a very good job with the voice, but the writing was dead-on.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I'm not a high-falutin critic of impressions personally, and not that big of a Ben Affleck fan either, but yeah ~ I laughed at least 10 times.   :D

I thought the Olberman sketch was really good but went on way too long. The rest of the show stunk.

It did go on really long.

What was with Affleck's, um, "hip hop" character?
