He doesn't look like he smells very nice.
Too soon?

McCain, Joaquin Phoenix, Paris Hilton, Blagojevitch -

Letterman might not be at the height of his funniness any longer, but he is still a pretty fearless ball-buster when it comes to certain guests and I really appreciate that about the guy.

Letterman's old feuds from the eighties were the stuff of legend.  He's actually kind of playing nice with Phoenix here.  The guy's clearly having some sort of drug problem.  Dave probably knows better than to go for the throat on that.

I know what you mean exactly.

I was the first guy in hardcore to whip people with his belt.

I was NOT in Joaquin's corner until watching the whole interview last night. Now I am.

The contrast between this and his Letterman appearance three years ago is alarming.

So ... is it an Andy Kaufman-style prank?

Or is he sticking to his "done with acting" pledge by being maximally ineffective in the promotion of his "last" film?

Or is he just completely strung out on god-knows-what?

Or all of the above?

I vote for solely an Andy Kaufman-style prank. I am 97% sure.

I'm 98% sure, and I would have to say Casey Affleck is an upgrade from Bob Zmuda.

This seems like A cry for help. Doesn't it?  He's obviously high.  Some folks pour themselves into their work, when life at home sucks.  When their life at work isn't fruitful either, this happens.  Classic burnout.  It's great that none of his "friends" are stepping in. I pray someones looking out for him.
Quick story: I was eating at A little hole in the wall , sometimes frequented by famous types.  I was enjoying my soy chicken enchiladas & I notice some jackass is seated on the patio smoking A cigarette.  The smoke is just blowing right inside the restaurant.  I went outside to let this guy know what he was doing.  I walk up behind him & say, "Excuse me, your cigarette smoke is blowing into the restaurant.  It's killing mean, would you please put it out?".  To my surprise, it's Joaquin Phoenix. He turns around and mutters something about being sorry, in A tone that sounded very wounded & fragile.  His endearing, childlike apology was very sincere.  When I sat back down, I felt bad.  Like I had been mean to him, & I wasn't.

The sudden change in energy at the very end of this longer version of the clip - when he takes off his shades, looks Dave in the eyes, and shakes his hand warmly - suggests to me that it's a put on. (Similarly, just before they play the clip, he pulls the gum off the desk, presumably thinking he's off-camera already.)

RT @Drdrew: Make no mistake Joaquin Phoenix is not a hoax.  This man is seriously ill and his life is in danger.  Stand by for trouble.
