After seeing the movie in a class of mine and having a talk with the filmmaker, I found out exactly why the film bombed the way it did. The creators of the movie had no intention to call the film "8MM 2." Originally, the film was called "The Velvet Side of Hell" but was changed at the last minute by Sony Pictures to 8MM 2 without letting the filmmakers have any say in the matter. By doing that, it screwed them out of theatrical releases and doomed it to a straight to video release with minimal advertising.

Again, this is from the filmmaker's mouths, not mine, so I really can't say what is truth, and what is hype.

I like the way the filmmaker blames the studio for naming it 8MM 2 and that's why it was straight to video, rather than the studio had to come up with some pretense for having allowed it to exist and to be marketed to anyone at all, so they pretended it was a sequel to something people watched.

I am intrigued by this comment on 8MM 2's IMDb board:

I have had enough of these fake sequels... it's just wrong. 8mm was my favourite film for a long time and this has severely tainted it.

They could have just called this "sexy movie w/ nudity and at least one threesome" if they were that worried about revenue - they didn't have to ruin my life!!!

If it's not an intended sequel from the start, you're only going to upset people by lying to them.

Some questions:

-Did 8MM 2 cause dontmakemegetloose to fall out of love with 8MM, or had 8MM already ceased to be his favorite film before 8MM 2 came out, and this only made it worse?

-What is dontmakemegetloose's current favorite movie?

-Would sexy movie w/ nudity and at least one threesome actually be a successful title? It's a little bit long. And wouldn't going with no capital letters in the title seem a little arty and possibly scare off the intended crowd?

-Would 8MM Too have been a better title?

With this and Road House 2 under his belt, I wonder what's next for Jonathan Schaech. He could do Clifford 2, or does he wait a while and go for Mr. Brooks Returns? I recently saw Quarantine, and afterwards, we debated the relative fame of the cast. I think it was eventually agreed that Schaeach was slightly more famous than the lady from Heroes, but less famous than that guy who always plays the Vaguely Russian Guy in movies.
