He should have at least spoken to my Fox News-addicted mother, who was consistently able to pinpoint Obama's radical (and innovative) socialist-Muslim leanings.

My Fox News-addicted mother had this to say:  Obama's wife looks "militant."

Her explanation of why the election turned into such a landslide: If it was closer, "they" would just riot.

My Fox-addicted dad says Obama is against the 1st amendment in some way. I can't remember exactly what his reason was. I started blocking things out when he said George Bush was in Iraq to help Iraqis and that he "had a good heart".

My mom still says Iraq's WMDs were "moved to Syria" just before the invasion. Ironically, she also likes to rail against "conspiracy theories" and "leftists" who merely "regurgitate things they read on blogs".

We try not to talk about politics these days.

There's a rumor that he supports the fairness doctrine (which really was a bad policy) even though he said he doesn't.  And even though the majority of Democrats don't.  Any dumb thing any Democrat says gets attributed to Obama.

This guy is really bringing dishonor to the Ziegler family name.

I know! I have a friend named John Ziegler.

Brimstone Howl anyone?

His cousin's a swell dude, too.

Yes, a close relative I admire greatly didn't vote for Obama because he's a "dirty Muslim" and a Communist.

It hurts, it really does.

Wait, I don't know anything about Barney Franks either.  I think I better go unvote.

Also...
my g.f.'s dad is a lunatic who thinks that there's going to be a socialist race war or something.  But my g.f. and I both see some kind of poetic positivity in that her generally awesome  94-year-old Uncle didn't live to see this day and to be freaked out and racist about it.  People over ninety generally get a free latent-racism pass from me, but it would've been pretty awkward.  I would've felt bad for him.  Racists under 90 get put on notice.

I almost feel guilty for not having politically insane parents. Not even a crazy uncle.

Me too, ever since Obama told that story about his grandmother, badmouthing your older relatives has become so fashionable.  I have nothing to talk about at parties anymore.

All my grandparents are dead, but my grim and disillusioned seventy-six-year-old mother and almost eighty-one-year-old father (birthday Saturday!) were both as happy and relieved to vote for Obama as two of the grim, disillusioned daughters they raised (the third only voted for Obama because I bullied her into it--she wanted to write in Kucinich [yes, she's a tad nuts]).   It is particularly delightful that my father really likes Michelle Obama.

Yes, I'm bragging.

I know lots of people asking this in a joking fashion, but I'm being serious:

Did Ziegler forget to take his medicine?
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

My parents, Democratic Iowans, (respectively) were down with Obama and Clinton early in the primary season. They were so happy to vote for Obama. It's nice that they share my politics, but that's not absolutely necessary. I'm just relieved they are not crazy old bats with bad politics running through their veins. Yes, I brag.

I still love my dad to death and we always get along really well. Because we never talk politics. We literally had our first (and hopefully last) long conversation about politics the day after the election. I've always avoided it. I think he does too... most of our family is democratic. I think he got really scared and changed his political views a lot after 9/11. It makes me sad but I still think he's a kind person.

My mom did vote for Nader this time around... she was just so tired of hearing my dad talk about McCain and me talk about Obama, that she voted third party.
