I'm picky but I like a fair amount. Mingus, Blakey, and Alice Coltrane are my favorites.

At large, I'd probably say "Nay," but I guess that wouldn't be fair because I really like a few artists (about 5 or 6 Miles albums, Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelly, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet).

I just remembered the John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman album. I change my answer to "Yea."
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

yea. not if there's any fusion involved, though.

what's everyone's vote for the best jazz era? personally, i keep going back to the 1920's hot 5's style stuff right up to early bebop, but i don't have a huge appetite for much beyond that. listening to coltrane or late miles always feels more intellectual than visceral... though i feel like a luddite (or a marsalis) for saying that.

I don't know if I'd say it's the best, but I'm a sucker for the cool west coast sound. Early Miles Davis (with Quintet especially), Oscar Peterson Trio, Chet Baker, even some Stan Getz. I love Mingus, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk and Art Blakey, but I'll put on Cookin/Relaxin/Workin/Steamin more often than I will Sketches of Spain or even Kind of Blue.

Yea.

I challenge any rock fan to give Coltrane's Afro-Blue from Live at the Village Vanguard, and tell me that it's anything but hard-fucking-core.

you also can't beat Mingus for sheer badassness. His cat toilet training program is a testament to this.

Yea. Miles, Wayne Shorter, Thelonius Monk, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Terence Blanchard, Omar Sosa, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, all of these are faves. I could never get into Mingus, for some reason.

I used to have a few Mingus albums during my college days but I can't remember much beyond the track "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting." Holy moly is that a good cut.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Yea.

mos: try "the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady."

As a matter of fact, I'm going to put this on! I oughta cross-post this to the "What are you listening to right now" thread.
