THIS TUESDAY!  2/17/09

The 2nd Annual WFMU's The Best Show on WFMU Best Show on WFMU Awards

The Kid has just asked me to take charge of the organizational efforts for this year's award show, which is going to happen in 3 days!
(How did he know I didn't have V-Day plans?)

This is an honor, of course, but I NEED YOUR HELP!  I can do all of the recording on Sunday and Monday, but we need to finalize the list of nominations and begin hunting for clips!

Here's the list of this year's categories.  We should come up with between 4 and 6 nominations for each.  While we probably don't have enough time for a purely democratic nomination process, we can surely arrive at a reasonable consensus provided we start posting in this thread ASAP!

BEST CALLER OF THE YEAR
Emma from Toronto, Samir from Gainesville, Laurie from Miami, Erika from Baltimore, Fredericks, Paycheque

BEST CALL OF THE YEAR*:
"The Joe Paterno Call", "1000 Fights", "Morgan Spurlock's Girlfriend", Todd Palin, Big Bill/Little Bill

BEST GUEST:
Andrew Daly, Zach Galifianakis, PFT, John Hodgman, The H-Man

SADDEST CALLER OF THE YEAR:
Julie, Spike, Fredericks, Tugboat Richey, Coffin Shopping Guy

WORST CALLER OF THE YEAR:
Julie, Spike, Trembling Eagle, Da Addict, Larry the Perv

MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER OF THE YEAR:
Julie, Spike, Fredericks, Trembling Eagle, Steve from North Hollywood

BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT ON TOM'S LIFE:
Joe The Plumber, Thor, PBR, Bryce, Marky Ramone, Matthew Tompkins

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR:
Fredericks from New Port Richey, Steve from NoHo, Julie, Emma

BEST DISMISSAL (GOMPs/Heave-hos)
Tom Jameses James
Drillbit Taylor
Michael K of the Cynics

BEST BEST SHOW SCRIVENER:
Omar

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:
Theodore Rockstar

*A new category for one-off calls.

I will edit this post to incorporate previous nominations and new ones as they come in.  Nominations with dates and times included are especially appreciated.  Thanks!

I'd nominate Bernie Taupin for call of the year and his version of "Tiny Dancer" in the "Best/Most Violent Threat" category.

Although he only called once, hugman should be considered for Rookie of the Year.

If these awards are just for 2008, Glaser can't be nominated for best guest.

As for Best Heave-Ho/GOMP, Tom Jamesing James on the April Fools show is up there.

I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Edit:  Yes, nominations are only to be from 2008.

Last year's awards were for calendar year 2007 only, which is why I assumed this year's would be for 2008. However, cutting off at the end of 2008 would disqualify the Bernie Taupin call I mentioned. I don't suppose it matters much unless Tom has strong feelings one way or the other.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Considering the stand out callers this year, I'm forced to look at this more like the oscars, in that nominees can win in more than one category. Is this correct? If so, here are my first glance suggestions (in bold). There will probably be more to follow as I think of them:

BEST CALLER OF THE YEAR
  • Julie from Cincinnati
  • Emma from Toronto
  • Fredericks from New Port Richey

BEST CALL OF THE YEAR:
  • "The Joe Paterno Call"
  • Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger
  • "1000 Fights"

BEST GUEST:
  • Andrew Daly
  • Zach Galifianakis
  • Jon Glaser
  • Paul F Tompkins
  • John Hodgman
  • Matt Fraction (although he may be more a caller than a guest)
  • Todd Barry

SADDEST CALLER OF THE YEAR:
  • Julie
  • Spike
  • Fredericks
  • Charlie the Addict
  • Beer in the Shower Guy

SADDEST CALL OF THE YEAR: (if you have a best call category in addition to best caller, you clearly must have saddest call as well)
  • "Go Shop For A Coffin"

WORST CALLER OF THE YEAR:
  • Julie
  • Spike
  • Michael K from The Cynics
  • The kid from Psychedelic Sitting Room

WORST CALL OF THE YEAR: (Should this not be a category as well? Just a thought.)

MOST DELUSIONAL CALLER OF THE YEAR:
  • Julie
  • Spike
  • Fredericks
  • Trembling Eagle

BEST/MOST VIOLENT THREAT ON TOM'S LIFE:
  • "I'm going to turn you in to the world's largest and dumbest hot-dog."

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR:
  • Fredericks from New Port Richey
  • Julie from Cincinnati
  • Steve from North Hollywood

BEST HEAVE-HO:

BEST BEST SHOW SCRIVENER:
  • Omar

Other Best Call possibilities:

Todd Palin 10/7/08
Big Bill, Little Bill, and Mr. Sherbet 11/25/08
Rod Langstrom 9/23/08
Matthew Tompkins 1/15/08

Though it doesn't really fit into the existing categories and Tom seems far too humble to present an award to himself, the Newbridge Mayubinatorial Debate deserves some kind of recognition for everybody involved.

And for best guest can we nominate Paul F Tompkins and Philly Boy Roy jointly for the 4/22/08 show?
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Man, are these always decided by the FOTs? Does Tom input his nominations and pick the winners?  What's the democratic process at work here?  And how can listener calls compete with Wurster calls??? I can't bring myself to nominate on the mean categories, at least not when it's a fellow FOT.

Thanks, MOS, but I'd prefer to think of 2009 as my rookie season, MLB style.

What happened last year was the listeners came up with a list of nominations and Tom narrows them down to an acceptable number of choices and picks the winner.

Same deal this year.  Tom picks the winners and approves the nominations.

They even gonna do awards this year?  I hope so. I loved that episode. And I've come around on ROTY.
Julie is to ROTY as Heath Ledger is to Best Supporting Actor.

I'm sure Julie will hate being compared to someone whose death bored her so.

essentially, the analogy makes more sense with anna nichole smith instead of heath ledger.

There was an Anna Nicole Smith nudie thing on showtime the other nite.  I mean, that's just creepy right? As soon as I finished, I just turned it right off.   Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ???

That's ghoulish!
I have a long history of booing

Since when do people lust only after the living?

(No, this is not an oblique way of confessing necrophiliac tendencies.)

I just thought I'd nominate hugman for creepiest post of the year, but I changed my mind.
