Man, this thread touches on a perfect topic in this "keeping up with the Anti-Joneses" miasma. I'd say most of my anxiety now stems from movies/tv shows/music i haven't consumed and reached an strong opinion. Took me so long to peruse this thread because this Maryland native hasn't watched any Wire (Yeah, me.)

I did watch Repo Man for the first time last year and fuckin' loved it, but in a rare way where I didn't kick myself for hopping on the bandwagon earlier. It was perfect and I seriously wish I could go away from something with that feeling more.

Guided By Voices: enh. I did get a friend into them through the one song of theirs I knew and liked ("Teenage FBI," of all things), but I've always felt like I could live without hearing 'em. Sort of like how I could live without hearing Pavement, except I have heard a lot of Pavement.

Ditto on Sopranos - watched the first three-four episodes when it first aired, didn't feel it, stopped. I realize it's a great show and all, but I can't get into it now.

Here you go check it out its the whole series in 9 minutes.

Now that I've seen it: it was pretty good.

For some reason, reading that so many have missed the Sopranos pains me more than anything else on this list. That, and heroin. How could you not do these things?

I'm realizing that I have a bad habit of dismissing entire genres of entertainment, even though I know there's good stuff there. I have total subconscious resistance to movies that are Westerns, medieval (castles, princesses), martial arts and most detective stuff. As for TV, I can't watch any police or hospital dramas no matter how much critical acclaim they have. With music, I'll actually try anything once, but am completely ambivalent to anything that could be described as Metal, aka, music for children.

i can see your aversion to those things cutout; however, youre truly missing out on some good westerns and detective/whodunits (a la film noir).  i cant imagine you missing out on anything good in martial arts or renaissance/period piece films.

Not true.  Even if you stick to the well-known stuff (Enter the Dragon, etc.), they're great entertainment.

I didn't like Westerns (other than Tombstone) until I broke the seal by watching the Man with No Name trilogy box set.  That, and the fact that I *live in the west* made me finally break down and start watching them.  I've been working my way through John Ford/Wayne classics ever since.  They really are good, and frankly easier to follow than the other kinds of older movies I tend to watch (fartsy European stuff and screwball comedies).

I never watched any crime/police shows until I started law school, and watched the first season of Law & Order, plus a few courtroom dramas.  Then Monk & the Rockford Files.  Procedural-type shows are often these perfectly tight and self-contained pieces of storytelling.

I've ended up liking most forms of genre fiction and movies.  And I don't understand why people make fun of historical novels except when they're by Gore Vidal.

Me too. The older I get, the more easily I'm satisfied by well-crafted potboilers. In my late teens and 20s I was a serious art/movie/lit snob, but I'm mellowing as I get older.
