Ron Asheton + his death, R.I.P.
« on: January 06, 2009, 12:27:58 PM »
Usually I don't care much about celebrity deaths, but this story struck me for a couple reasons. First, I found it sad when the Stooges got back together to see him looking like Jim DeRogatis (full disclosure, as someone with weight issues, I find very fat people to be the saddest people of all. i know that part of it is me), all bloated and then in his cool guy uniform. Secondly, very little is sadder than the idea of someone dying and then it not being noticed for several days. And lastly, who knew Ron Asheton would have a personal assistant.

So anyways, I love the Stooges and am saddened that he died and in a way that is more sad to me than most famous or semi-famous deaths.

Come on, Jason

That's touching, bro.
Wait, which one's "touching", again?

Shit, this sucks.  Glad he at least got to ride the reunion wave.  This still won't get them in the R&R Hall of Fame.

this is true and usually what makes me sadder than other factors involved.

I love Funhouse as much as the next guy, maybe even more unless the next guy also pre-ordered the box set like 6 months before it was released. And I appreciate his contributions and so forth but, I mean, there's a really fine line between neo-Nazi and Nazi enthusiast.

Still, yeah, sad.

Now I feel bad for saying that.

Still gonna hit POST!

Ron Asheton was a Nazi enthusiast?  I can't imagine he was that bad if Mike Watt was in a band with him.

Anyway, sad news.  He was an awesome guitarist.

Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

He wore SS gear onstage sometimes, but he certainly wasn't the only punk to do so. I don't know whether he was really a white power guy or if he just wore the stuff for shock value. Never heard any stories about him being racist or Anti-Semitic, but then again my store of Ron Asheton stories is pretty small.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

I'm going to say the same thing about Siouxsie Sioux when she dies so take my Nazi accusations with a grain of salt.

ron asheton was a major military history buff with an encyclopedic knowledge of that era of warfare - NOT a nazi. i'm interested in true crime and have spent much time during my adult life reading hundreds of books on the subject. does that make me a serial killer or member of organized crime?

read legs mcneil's "please kill me" or mike watt's tour diaries from the past 5 years on the road w/ the stooges for more insight: http://www.hootpage.com/

My point was more that he was a dirtbag kid who dressed up like a Nazi for shock value. Sorry I disparaged Ron "New Order/New Race" Asheton, the kind, thoughtful historian.

NPR (National Public Radio) not my pulsating community, got it wrong again.  At the end of Fresh Air they played "Search and Destroy" on which James Williamson is playing guitar (Ron's on bass) they are so clueless over there.
Did the same thing to George Harrison when he died playing Clapton's uncredited solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as a tribute to George's prowess on the six-string.  Add this to their describing Bon Jovi as a heavy metal band and the entire credibility of their programing gets called into question.

Forget All Things Considered I'll just listen to Best Show archives.  At least then when I hear untruths I can assume they're intentional.

i think we're talking about different things here. you're right, dressing up like a nazi is a total dirtbag move. there's no excuse for that. i just think there's a huge leap between that and actually being a nazi. if i ever came across anything indicating he actively supported such small-minded, hateful beliefs - i'd be the last person defending him here (or anywhere else.)
