This past week has been a good one for doomsday enthusiasts. What's going to kill us all in the coming days seems to be either a bunch of militant extremists getting a hold of an unknown number of nukes or this brand new pig-a-majig virus. Let's chat about our inevitable demise as a civilization, shall we?

Sure, so far the only deaths reported of the swine flu have been in Mexico and maybe there's a 10,000 strong elite force solely devoted to protecting the dismantled components of Pakistan's warheads. But we need to live off headlines for a good thread. So, how are we all gonna die today?

A friend of mine offhandedly announced today that he was stockpiling dry goods, guns + ammo and food. I thought he was joking, but he wasn't. He said it was on account of the swine flu. This is someone who'd ordinarily be making fun of people who react like this. What the hell is going on?

I had a college professor who used to be an E.R. doctor. During the bird flu scare a few years ago he was talking about how our medical infrastructure would be completely crippled in the event of a deadly pandemic. I reckon shit would go haywire fast if people started dying in droves, but I also seriously doubt this pig flu is the one that'll do us in.

So the news have been talking about this swine flu, but have failed to mention details...like...symptoms and such. So then I wonder, do I have it?!

After bird flu, madcow, ebola and SARS, its hard to take any of this seriously. I wish that the people who covered stuff like this were aware of the egg on their face from their past hysterical reactions. Then, at least, the public might know when they are being ridiculous and when it might be time to be aware.

I read the Zombie Survival Guide and I have to admit, I started sizing up my apartment. I had a realty check at a hardware store when I passed a counter with machete's and I wondered "if I get one for each of my roommates, should I get a larger one for the biggest guy I live with."

The media does love pumping up stories like this. BUT - past warnings of threats that haven't materialized are not evidence that the swine flu is not a serious danger.

It really is the government's and media's job to warn us about stuff like this, and warnings, by their nature, have a large degree of uncertainty.

My wife and I spent the weekend getting all paranoided up with swine flu fears and then foolishly went to a movie and dinner Sunday night at the Palisades Mall which was mega-busy.  A pair of IMAX 3D loaner glasses has never been cleaned so furiously.
