I agree, arcuradio. The music is great, but it unfortunately comes in a ridiculous package. I think I already lost the outside plastic cover thingy, so now I'm really screwed. I'm all for interesting packaging, but not ones that are actually kind of annoying to use.

Twee isn't exactly new. It started in the early '80s with C-86 bands, like the Pastels and the Wedding Present. The jangly strummy la la pop sound continued to grow with Sarah Records, which brought us the sweet, sweet sounds of 14 Iced Bears, Heavenly, and Talulah Gosh. Around the '90s, twee made its way to the colonies by way of K Records. We can thank K Records for the Beat Happening, Marine Research, the Softies, and the All Girl Summer Fun Band.

I don't think the term "twee" was coined until the mid-nineties-ish. I am reasonably sure that the late John Peel came up with that one. British DJs are always coming up with all sorts of terminology.

Laurie -- what is your fave Heavenly album?  I've been listening to Heavenly Vs. Satan and The Decline and Fall of Heavenly a lot lately.  I have not heard Le Jardin De Heavenly, which is Spike's favorite.

Other twee mavens are free to weigh in.

Le Jardin de Heavenly is wonderful, but I think I love The Decline and Fall of Heavenly best. "Me and My Madness" was my favorite song at 14 years of age.

Can anyone give me more details about this item on Stylus's list of the "Top Ten When Worlds Collide Moments":
Worlds Collide
At an all-ages, downtown Olympia club known as Tropicana, flaky minimalists Beat Happening open for Black Flag, the ultimate purveyors of exhilarating anguish. Backstage, doe-eyed Calvin Johnson meets his polar opposite in the testosterone-fueled Henry Rollins.
What Happens Next
During the opening set, Johnson prances about like the stick-figured kitty-cats that adorn his gig posters. Rollins, feeling he’s being mocked, defiantly plants himself in the front row and at one point, reaches up to cover Johnson’s crotch. “Didn’t your mother teach you any manners?” Johnson responds without missing a beat, and then continues the show uninterrupted. Final score: twee 1, machismo 0.
"Alright, well, for the sake of this conversation, let's say the book does not exist."

Television Personalities: Twee or Not Twee?

Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers era Jonathan Richman: Twee or Not Twee?

I'm not a chicken,  you're a turkey.

Television Personalities are twee as fuck. They were on Little Teddy Records for christ's sake!

And Jonathan Richman definitely has his twee moments. "Ice Cream Man" is wonderfully twee. I'm not sure I'd label his entire discography as twee, though.

Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man?"
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

Momus counts as garbage.

Not recycling.
