Pictures from the opening night of the Boom A Ring circus in Coney Island. They'll be playing until Sept. I highly recommend this. Truly breathtaking. Tickets are cheap too. $10.

Sorry, but this makes me really, really sad. I knew that Thor Equities would get corporate stuff into Coney Island quickly, but I did not know it would be this quickly.  I also know that this had to happen, that the old Coney Island was going bankrupt anyway, but my sadness is an irrational one I choose to hold on to.

My first date with my wife was at Coney Island. Our daughter was named (partially) for Ruby's Bar & Grill.  She later marched in the Mermaid Parade and got a medal for "Best Little Mermaid."  When it came in the mail, she turned to me, all of 4 years old, and asked "Am I dreaming?" Needless to say, the place is sacrosanct to me.

I know I am in the minority here. I know most people went to Coney Island and just saw the filth.  But I enjoyed the filth, and I enjoyed going on the Scrambler, knowing there was a slight chance that a wing nut would come loose, ending my life with a loud crash and a twisted heap of metal.

The arrival of the corporate circus symbolizes the end to me.  I know nostalgia is a sucker's game, but in this case, I am happy to be a sucker.

Sad? This is the best thing to happen to Coney in a long time. Thor has nothing to do with this. It's not even on their land. The city brought the circus in. If the circus wasn't there that would be an empty lot. As someone whose family has direct ties to Coney history, it does my heart good to see some new quality entertainment come to Coney.

If you want to see what Thor has brought to Coney here's a picture of their failed "Festival by the Sea."

Thor couldn't even get the correct tents for Coney (they need to withstand hurricane gusts) so the city made them take them down.   Unlike Ringling Bros. who actually paved the ground with asphalt and installed drains which connected with the city sewers, Thor just left a dirt floor for his flea market with no drainage. Imagine trying to shop while walking around in that mud.
Thor's Festival by Sea, which was supposed to be a flea market combined with a carnival, is nothing more than a blight on Coney.

To think, Thor evicted the Go Karts, Batting Cages, and Bumper Boats

and this is what he puts in.

The old was Coney was not going Bankrupt. Astroland was evicted because Thor would not offer them a lease.
The city neglected Coney for the past 50 years. What you saw as filth that you loved, was really the city not caring enough to encourage new rides and attractions. Instead they allowed land speculators to buy up land and create vacant lots.

My family's ride the Thunderbolt Roller Coaster in the good times

and after the city demolished the ride in 2000.

Another vacant lot was created.

This is why I think the circus with it's beautiful tents are a sight for sore eyes out in Coney.

I understand, HB. Thought that Ringling Bros. was Thor-driven.  Thanks for the clarification.

But still, I liked the non-corporate feel of Coney Island (although further inspection does show McDonald's and others having their footprint on it...but that was always minimal).  Regardless of who brought in Ringling Brothers, it is big, big business.  Plus, as I mentioned on a call to Tom a while back, I hate circuses.  Sad animals in a tent are not my cup of tea.

But look, I totally understand your point.  The city was not giving a shit and the area kinda fell apart. But for some reason, I liked it that way, kind of like how I preferred the old Times Square, which was admittedly a dump.  It had a lot more personality when it was lined with a million Larry the Pervs than it does now lined with Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Mars 2112, etc.

That tiger looks thrilled. I'm with yeh on circus' Jon, they make me miserable too. There's a level of animal training where it just gets robotic, creepy, and most of all, sad.

That picture reminds me of this!:

Coney Island has always been made up of individual amusement parks owned by private individuals. Together they comprise the amusement area. In the past there was Luna Park, Steeplechase, Dreamland, and Astroland. Now there is one park remaining, that being Deno's Wonderwheel Park. There were rumors in the 90's of a Disney takeover of Coney but they backed down because they could not gain total control over Coney.

Although many people were aghast at the thought of Disney taking over, Disney would be preferable to what is going on there today.
The city's plan to rezone Coney would shrink the amusement area from 62 acres down to 9 acres putting Coney on par with NJ's Point Pleasant amusement area. Coney needs to be big and the city needs to change it's plan.

Read all about it here and check out this amazing video shot this past Monday.
