Great product, crappy web site
« on: July 09, 2009, 08:02:00 PM »
Maybe the 90% of FOTs who are web designers will like this.  I buy random stuff from the internet and I've been amazed at how often the best products have 1994-looking websites.  Particularly clothing companies that still make their products in America.

Columbia Knit:

They make really, really high quality rugby shirts, made in the US of A.

http://www.usa-wear.com/factorystore.html

Birdwell Beach Britches:

Classic 60s brand, the best beach trunks you can get.  USA. Possibly the worst website I've ever seen in my life:

https://www.birdwellbeachbritches.com/

There are so many examples of this.

Not exactly reminiscent of a GeoCities website, but still quite primitive nonetheless.

Jerry's Fine Used Records here in Fun City.

He sells only records, and most of them sell for $3, $4, or $5. It's one of the best record stores in the country.

Paper Rad

They make seizure inducing cartoons and cognitive dissonance inducing comics:

Since I'm a nerd I buy California Republic pencils (the only affordable source for Japanese-quality woodcase pencils in the US) and they sell only through eBay.

When will the pencil community finally catch up?

Pencils you can afford to splurge on, unless you get the Craft Design Technologies pencils that are only sold in the US at Design Within Reach, for $25 for one box of 12.

Just get some Mars Lumograph HBs at Staples.

I daresay that the site that I maintain for my parents' store is pretty crappy, but cut me a break - I only know basic HTML! Look at those frames! And that colour scheme!

That looks like a great store and you've done a yeomanly job.  Better than my usual iWeb attempts.

I like the copy for sauces:  "Various different kinds"

But I'm disappointed by the lack of a midi background song.  Please correct.

That place looks delicious. If my family ran a store like that I would probably be quite large.

From the business world:

It's like they made it a challenge to get where you want to go.  A puzzle, if you will, but with no feeling of reward at the end.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

NYC's Alternative High School "City As School"

WHAT'S SPECIAL: Haven for disaffected youth.
DOWNSIDE: Access to gym is limited and the elderly building has cramped quarters.

http://www.city-as-school.org/

From an insideschools.org review:

"Since 1972, City-as-School has been a haven for kids who are alienated by traditional classrooms. Students who could not thrive at their original schools including rebels, openly gay kids, kids who have been teased for their looks, and a good number of disaffected academic achievers find a welcome here."

My favorite part: <title> tag still reads as 'Untitled Document'
