It was a no-win: all the big American breweries are owned by foreign corporations.  Plus they'd say he's pandering.  If he drinks a Sam Adams, say, that's American, but he gets hit for being highfalutin'.


If I'd been advising him, I'd have told him to go with some Chicago-area local beer.  He'd still get hammered by his critics, but it would seem to be the most authentic choice for a very un-authentic situation.
