New Haven peeps?
« on: July 25, 2009, 04:03:50 AM »
Anyone out there in Best Show forum land live in New Haven?

I've had an unexpected domestic situation come up here (long-term relationship ending) so it looks like in a couple of months I'll be heading up to stay with a friend who's finishing her doctorate at Yale.

I'm interested to know what you guys think of the place and if I can get some recommendations of places in and around the area to go.

Thanks much!

I go to school in Connecticut and venture down to New Haven every once and a while.

There's a halfway decent art house theater, this club/bar called Bar that has music every now and then but from what I understand is just a shitty dance club most of the time. There's always Toad's Place. They have a lot of shit (Sublime cover bands, etc) but they get a fair amount of good acts too. Cafe Nine does music too. I haven't been there, but my friends say it's okay.

As for bars and restaurants, I haven't really been to many. The Playwright was okay, but I was really only been there for a beer or two.

There's always Yale too. There's some art and stuff on campus.

There are a couple sort of shitty parts, but it isn't too bad compared to some other cities. Most of the worthwhile stuff is downtown, which is like the downtown section in any moderately gentrified city.

Hope that helps, sorry to hear about the relationship troubles.

New Haven is pretty nice- definitely eat at Claire's. I wish I had more advice to offer, but I don't actually live there.

Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, I definitely recommend NOT going through this divorce-type nonsense.

Ugh.  Sorry to hear about your troubles.
The place "Bar," mentioned above, is my go to place for pizza (and yeah, sometimes beer) when I'm stuck in traffic (which is often) on the way from NJ/NYC to RI.  I've diverted myself from road rage coronaries into nice late afternoon snack/reading/New Haven time there twice in the last month, alone.
In a previous incarnation, it was ALSO, coincidentally, the place I mentioned on the show a coupe of weeks ago, if you heard it, where the Harvard kids had their Wild Turkey Breakfast show.  On a weekday afternoon it's nice and quiet, but on weekend nights... you do get the impression that you might see those same kids still there, puking on cars or passed out in the bathroom.
There's a book store on York St., next to the aforementioned Toad's Place that used to be called Book Haven, but is now something like "Labyrinth's," that I've gotten some good things at in the past - caters to students, obvs, but that can be a good thing when you find that Adrienne Rich book you didn't even know existed...
Now write me a receipt so I can tip on outta here...

I'm a big fan of the Criterion Cinemas in New Haven. Just saw the Hurt Locker there a few days ago.  They get mostly limited release movies, the theaters are nice, the seats are comfortable and the popcorn is cheap (well, at least compared to other places).

There's a Mamoun's in New Haven which has excellent, cheap falafel.  Also a lot of dang good pizza places.

Avoid Cutler's "Record" Shop.  They used to carry a lot of records and now moved on to pretty much solely CDs last time I was there.  Maybe they didn't recognize where the trend was going. It pretty much stinks and the prices ain't so good.

Shows at Toad's Place can be great if they happen to book a good band, which can be rare. (Ted Leo and Titus Andronicus played in June and that was great!)

Cafe Nine has good bands, but unfortunately for me is 21+. I've seen that they've had among others --King Khan and the Shrines, Davilla 666, Dirtbombs. And looking at the schedule I see that Digital Leather is playing there soon, as is Intelligence, the Spits, and some other good bands.

I'm kind of hard on CT after living here for my whole life and going to college out-of-state but there is definitely fun to be had here!
