This is not reassuring;

"KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A Knox County school nurse has died and her family says they believe it's due to complications of H1N1 flu. However, the state Department of Health has not confirmed the cause yet.

Sondra Cash, 59, died on Thursday.

If her death is confirmed later as flu-related, it would be the first such reported death in Knox County.

Cash was hired by Knox County Schools in September 2007. This was her first year at Bearden Middle School. Before that, she worked at South-Doyle Middle School.

"When God created her, there was an angel on earth that everybody had," says Tammy West, who met Sondra Cash two years ago when they were both nurses working at South-Doyle Middle School. "

This school is about 4 miles from my home.

I concur. I've have coxsackie virus (aka hand, foot & mouth disease, which is a virus that children usually get, but like chicken pox, if you get it as an adult it's 100x worse), I can handle anything. Hubris be damned.

Tens of thousand of people in this country die of flu every year.  By all accounts, H1N1 mostly manifests as a fairly mild illness.  It's only if it mutates that we need to worry.

Also, note that the the claim that this nurse died of complications of H1N1 comes from her family.  At least wait till their assertion is confirmed before you start to fret.

There have been a couple of casualties from H1N1 here in Sweden aswell, but as soon as you look past the panicky headlines you notice a pattern: almost all of those who have tragically passed away from swine flu complications were already ill in some other way - cancer, HIV, heart conditions, etc. Most other people affected by it will probably be bedridden for a couple of days (it's a flu, after all), and then be fine.

It's kind of scary how fast the flu is spreading though (and there will be mandatory flu shots here within a couple of weeks, starting with hospital staff, pregnant women, toddlers, then working their way down to the less-likely-to-suffer people like me (30-somethings)), but as Sarah notes, the real trouble begins if/when it mutates.

Only problem is that H1N1 tends to effect generally healthy, younger people. Most flus are bad for the old and the very young (like toddlers and the like). But this one is ready strike people like most of us (otherwise healthy people in their twenties and up). Kind of like in 1918. Not trying to fear monger or anything but it is something to think about. (source)
