Also, my girlfriend just told me that she was interviewed by Nardwuar in the early 90s when she was on tour with her very-young-at-the-time indie pop band. He asked her what it was like to attend the same church as Chris Murphy from Sloan.

It was an art thing. Like Nam June Paik cutting John Cage's tie. ART!

I think it's the opposite of bullying in the Sonic Youth video. He's so in the flesh that it makes it profoundly easy for people who are so inclined to knock him down and kick sand in his face. Regardless of how he was asking questions, they, completely unprovoked, broke his rare record and physically assaulted him. How is that defensible?

Of course, compare that to his more recent interview with Sean Lennon where he's badgering a son about whether his mom was writing songs about masturbation and what he thought about her nude photos, and it's easy to see that it definitely comes full circle.

I haven't seen the Sonic Youth one - just a couple where people seem either agitated or tell him to fuck off (I think it was Courtney Love?). I'll check the Sonic Youth one out, but from the way you describe it, you're absolutely right. I didn't know they actually broke his shit - thats awful.

More so than Philly Boy Roy, the Mr. Loophole/Matthew Lesko character sounds EXACTLY like Nardwuar.  I guess Lesko sounds a lot like Nardwuar to begin with though.

Sloan's first interview with Narduar (which I think is audio-only) is a great treat - they really don't get it. Granted, it was sometime in the early 90s - I think they've come around since then. When Chris and Jay had a show on the CBC, I seem to remember Chris talking about how he went from being Narduar's enemy to his friend...

Does anyone know if Tom will be getting around to interviewing Rick the Temp at any point?

I remember Chris Murphy from Sloan being on MuchMusic dressed as Narduwar for Halloween. It was awesome.

by the way, I saw the Evaporators at this big garagepunk fest in las vegas. and the dude from the smugglers whose name escapes me introduced nardwuar s the greatest frontman in the world. i knew who nardwuar was but had never seen the evaporators before so I was very skeptical. Then he came out and proved it. Now, i can hear some of you whining about Jimmy (James Ostergerg, you know him as Iggy Pop) being the greatest alive today, but I've never seen iggy get a big ole room full of rock'n'roll dudes to participate in a giant ring around the rosey. It was one of the best shows I've seen, but also one of the grossest as he likes to body surf a lot and he's very sweaty and very hairy.

My favorite part of Nardwuar's Best Show appearance was that he KEPT SAYING JW's name, and you could hear Tom struggling between doing his usual "Who's that?" and being courteous to a guest who he clearly admires. His whispered, mumbled answers to questions about JW made me laugh even while I felt uncomfortable for him.

Yep it was a classic Nardwuar interview. I'd lay money on him knowing that Wurster isn't mentioned on air.

I watched a youtube video of one of his interviews and for the first few seconds I could've sworn he was a JW character. I was very confused.

You are ape-eared MoS. They don't even look alike:

I don't know who that tranny hooker shaking Nardwuar's hand is though.

You misspelled "granny".

The guy from the Smugglers was probably Grant Lawrence, who hosts a radio show and a pretty good weekly podcast rundown of Canadian indie music for CBC Radio 3 (and is not so shabby as a frontman himself). It's worth checking out.

yea, Grant. Yea, I love the smugglers.  Grant's pretty hilarious, too. I remember reading his wrapup of the Lookout! 25th anniversary weekend and laughing out loud. I remember during the smugglers set the blonde guitar player did a somersault mid solo. it was incredible. thanks for the link, i'll check it out.

I have found my new favorite way to spend 7-8pm Wednesday night. I listened to the Ian MacKaye/Henry Rollins interviews (ie two of the most serious, and sometimes humorless, men in music), and I love how Rollins is like, "You have one question left - make it good", and Narduwar offers to give him his six remaining questions and let Henry pick which one he wants to answer, and somehow Henry ends up answering like eight questions. It's insane.
