Turntable question
« on: October 12, 2009, 01:34:04 PM »
I am writing because if anyone knows the answer to this, it is one or more FOT. After the kick-ass advice you all gave me with my cat, I am going to look no further for any kind of advice. So here we go...

My turntable is kind of old. I got it about 15 years ago. It is a Sony PS-252 that I got from my friend's deceased grandmother.

I listen to vinyl about three times a month at most and truth be told, I have not replaced the needle EVER (don't judge).

Over the past few months, records have started to sound tinny - almost gramophone-like.  CD's and tapes sound fine so I know the problem is not the receiver or the speakers.

My question: Does this sound like a stylus problem or am I looking at a new turntable?

Thank you,
JfM

Check the wires on the back of the stylus.  Make sure they're tight.  If there's no improvement... just get a new stylus.  If the disks are spinning at the right speed you don't need to buy a whole new turn table.

I just had a friend with excellent taste offer me a box of records.  Including an autographed Elvin Jones record.

Synchronistically, I was reading his offer as you were posting this thread.  Makes one's head spin.

Look at Amazon for a stylus. I picked up Shure's top of the line there for 30 bucks a year or so ago.

I got a Grado one for my old turntable and its been working great for 8 or so years.

I found this link online, perhaps you could figure out what you need using this webpage.

And all this time I thought needledoctor.com was a site for heroin enthusiasts.

All this time I thought Needles and Pins was about different stylus options.
