heya. Thanks to all who helped me make that mix cd for my old man a few weeks ago. He really dug it.

So I work with this kid (okay, he's 26) who I occasionally hang out with. Nice dude, but when I first met him a few years ago, he still hadn't grown out of the RHCP/Tool realm of listening. With a gentle guiding hand, I was able to introduce him to stuff like the Melvins, Kyuss & The Black Keys.

I've been wanting to make a new mix cd for him (mostly because I am sick of listening to the same stuff at his place). What are some artists/ bands that are similar to White Stripes/ Black Keys that I can turn him on to? I tried JSBX & some garage stuff like the Oblivians but it didn't take. Slide guitar is a bonus. It would also help if this is somewhat contemporary music where the bands are still around and playing.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Heartless Bastards

I'll second that. I'd also consider Deadboy & the Elephantmen or that Dax Riggs album.
I know he wasn't that receptive to JSBX, but maybe Heavy Trash?

It may not take if he's going for modern stuff, but Hound Dog Taylor is an obvious touchpoint for those Black Keys guys.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Yeah, and maybe a few of the more gonad-y Stooges songs?

The Black Hollies.  Some of King Khan, maybe?  it also sounds totally different, but I have a gut feeling that people who like The Black Keys would like Jay Reatard.
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

As always, thanks for coming through folks! Definitely some great suggestions here, which I will surely incorporate into this cd.

The best part of the Hound Dog Taylor legend has got to be this:

"Blues legend Hound Dog Taylor had 6 fingers on each hand. The story has it, he amputated the one on the right hand with a razor blade, while drunk."
