Steve Coogan BBC box now available on Region 1 DVD!
« on: November 30, 2009, 06:16:26 PM »

Awesome news for any FOTs who share Tom's reverence for Coogan but don't have a region-free DVD player.

If you're a S&W fan but you've never checked out Steve Coogan's BBC shows, you really ought to rectify the situation. They're among the funniest stuff that has ever been put on a big or small screen, and there's a definite kinship between his style of funny and Kid Jersey's.

I could try to prove the point with a bunch of YouTube clips, but I don't want to diminish any of the best bits by yanking them out of context. Just put this on your holiday gimme list. Or give it to someone special and immediately borrow it.

SWEET!
It's nice to see them all together in one box.  The only two I haven't seen, or found, are Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible and The Tony Ferrino Phenomenon.  So many hours of lolz.

If my Secret Santa wants to spend a lot of money, this would be an acceptable gift.

Am I nuts in thinking that Saxondale may be even better than I'm Alan Partridge? It has all of the funny -- perhaps not quite all, as there are bits in Partridge that are completely untouchable -- while being a little more empathetic and heartfelt.

I guess you could argue that Saxondale is a little more formulaic, with the repeated scenes of Tommy following a flight of fancy for too long and talking himself into trouble, but that's used a lot on Partridge, too, and in both cases the gag is always so well executed and timed that it never stops being funny.

I liked Saxondale better, but from what I have heard, I'm Alan Partridge's oh, would it be the 2nd season? runs circles around the 1st one ... and the 2nd has to this point not been a Region 1 disk. I think I've got that right.

I'd just go through IMDB Pro, but I don't have access to it anymore.

I've mostly heard the opposite, that season 2 was a step down.  I've never checked it out for that reason.  Does this Coogan box contain both?

I totally recommend checking out Saxondale season 2 if you liked season 1.  It's maybe a little darker, deals with aging a bit, but just as funny.
Saxondale vs. Alan Partridge:  I have to admit, Alan Partridge was so perfect, in my mind, that I was a bit hesitant to check out Saxondale for fear it wouldn't live up to it, and maybe diminish my worship of Steve Coogan, but it was somehow just as good, even though completely different.

I was talking about IAP season 2.  I've seen all of Saxondale.
