Sloan Albums -- Your Favorite Is ?
« on: December 04, 2009, 03:28:23 PM »
Why is this poll about favorite Sloan albums?

Upcoming show, frequently played (and occasionally discussed) on the show and good Canadians.  Reasons enough.

Soon after I moved to NYC, I went to a Sloan show.  I believe it was at the Bowery Ballroom and it was great but ridiculously loud.  At the time I thought that was because they were using their same gear that they need to play much larger venues in Canada.

What's the best place to start? A-Sides Win? I've liked everything I've heard from them on the Best Show.

I'm sure A-Sides Win is solid but I haven't heard it. One Chord To Another is my favourite. It was from their golden age, in my opinion. Navy Blues is also really good. I haven't kept up with their newer records.

I would say get One Chord to Another and Twice Removed.
Then get Never Hear the End of It and Navy Blues.
Then get Parallel Play.
I'm not the biggest fan of Action Pact or Pretty Together, I haven't heard the new EP or Between the Bridges, the first album is them trying to be super "alternative" (Smeared is not bad, just dated. The song writing is still pretty strong, but not everyone had found their voice yet), and the live album isn't anything essential.

I voted for Twice Removed and then realized I like One Chord... more.

If I may, I'd suggest OCTA, NB and TR together. They are really great all together like that.

Then I'd go for NHTEOI and PP together - NHTEOI is so unexpectedly good, and then PP is like a kick ass B-sides collection accompanying it.

PT has aged better than I ever expected it, but there are clunkers - it's their McCartney II.

And, if you can, try to get the double disc One Chord - their "Beach Boys Party" disc is really really a lot of fun.

Picking a favorite Sloan album is tough... On some days it's One Chord To Another and others it is Twice Removed. I've been listening to Parallel Play and Never Hear The End Of It quite a bit lately. I rarely ever listen to Action Pact.... hated that it didn't have any Andrew songs on it.... and it just felt bland overall.

One Chord to Another has "The Good in Everyone," so it wins.

Between the Bridges, without a doubt. Overlooked at the time and very much a love letter to Halifax, it's easily got one of their best arena songs (Losing California). And there's not a dud on that album. I love Twice Removed and One Chord, but this wins.

I thought you had said one of their best AREA songs, and then I was disappointed you said Losing California and not The Marquee and the Moon... And then I realized I read you wrong...

MY BAD!

Patrick is the king of Sloan arena songs. I was hoping for Money City Maniacs when I saw them at Maxwell's this week. Oh well.

Not what I voted for, but BtB is definitely the hidden gem in their catalog.  Just as strong as their recognized classics, as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe it was the conceit of having each song flow into the next, but the the songwriting just takes leaps and bounds on that album (not that previous albums were deficient). It absolutely has to be listened to in one sitting. It feels wrong to just listen to one song.

Taking in "Never Hear..." right now, and really enjoying it.
