Favorite Best Show Moments of 2009? Of the Decade?
« on: December 27, 2009, 06:24:44 PM »
I've been seeing these lists everywhere and thought I would start one for the forum. I'm not assigning a number like, "Top 5 Favorite Moments" because you might have an odd or prime number of favorite moments and like to celebrate diblersity. And I'm throwing "decade" in there, as well, because next year will be ten years for Best Show.

Mine is a mash-up. It's mostly '09 stuff but some older stuff, too.  I'm also just going to put the moment, not the show. If you want the show, message me.

My Top 5 Favorite Best Show Moments (mash-up):
5. PFT and Tom: Juggalo Talk
4. Pizza Party song
3. skip being played on "Someone Saved My Life Tonight"
2. Karl fixes the studio for 3 hours
1. Tom vs. The Brusher
Doing it Mentos style.

My single favorite moment is Jimmy Crespo's call (11/29/05).
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Kid eBay tops PFT's peanut brittle and Cross's drinking-with-Harlow story for BIT OF THE DECADE.

And the Juggalo talk defined The Best Show in 2009.

The crowning glory of the Best Show was the Mount Everest calls.  It would take a lot to top that.

Off the top of my head:

The first Zachary Brimstead call
Zeph Marshack, Rose's uncle
The Soaker

It's not as laugh out loud funny, but the cleverness and vitriol that came up with "The Millionaire (Morning Zoo Pace)" should also be remarked upon.

I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!

I forgot about Rick the Soaker! Loved that one.

I guess I really like the unplanned calls.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Two of my favorite bits are the Smirnoff Ice District Manager bit and Mother 13...The First Rock Band on Mt. Everest! (Parts I & II). That said, there are hundreds of other gems too, like PBR's psychic son and Tony Torgvort that are classic and I know I'll enjoy many many more times.

I'm really fond of the Smirnoff Ice bit because it's executed to perfection. I can't imagine an idea like that ever working anywhere else, but that's probably true of so much of what goes on in the Best Show.

The Mayubanatorial debates (sp?) ... An amazing convocation of candidates, plus Tom's coinage of the term "balance  buddies".

And the show where Best Show listeners helped write Ted Leo's "The World is in The Turlet" and Ted delivered the finished product at the end of the show ... astounding.

Tom singing along with Under Pressure. The first time I heard it I actually got a little choked up.

Well, also ... Jon Benjamin.

Remember how he couldn't stop his leg?

When did this happen?
Singing along with Wise Up is up there for me too.

Is that the time with PFT, when Aimee Mann sings a verse like a talking bird? That one got to me too. (I'm immune to blatant cloying sentimentality but a sincere curveball can turn me into jello.)

january 23, 2007 1:53 mark, tom determines whether freddy mercury or david bowie wins 'under pressure'

It's more fun to just listen to that whole show and have it sneak up on you.

There's a "Tom Sings" thread here:

Agreed. I used to play this all the time to get people into the Show. It worked on a couple of occasions. "The sleaziest rocker of all time" has also proven to be a great clip for people to get into Tom's style.

Off the top of my head, The Gorch, Gathering of the Juggalos, and Ye Olde Burger Barn are my top 3.

I'm sure I could think of a solid top 20, but I also have yet to work through much of the archives. So I'm sure there's gems in there I haven't discovered yet.
