Devo on SNL
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:21:12 AM »
I was never crazy about this cover as recorded, but I really dug this live version:

Hey guitar guys, have you ever seen someone tape their pedals all over their guitar like that?

That drumbeat is one of the all-time greatest beats ever.
I'm warning you with peace and love.

That video was before Jerry started foggin'.

That's pretty awesome, both the musical performance and the "choreography". I remember hearing a live album of theirs years ago (wish I could remember which one) and being blown away by how good it was.

I also had no idea that Fred Willard hosted SNL.

Yah, for some reason this cover just did not speak to me, but I was an insane Stones fan for a very long time, and even though I really love Devo too, well ... I just decided to not acknowledge this song.

Here's Devo performing "Through Being Cool" on the show Friday's. They really do blur the line between concerts and performance art.

I love Devo, love that cover.

As far as guitars/pedals, there was a band in Bloomington in the 90s called El Nino (not the other El Nino) which used a lot of noisy, heavily pedalled up guitar in their sound, and the guitarist essentially covered the guitar with effects pedals he had taped on. I don't know if that was a Devo influenced move or not.

I was never crazy about this cover as recorded, but I really dug this live version:

I remember my father complaining about that SNL performance. He really hated them.

No where near as progressive as Manhattan Transfer, but what are you going to do?

Man. I never realized Devo had a triple guitar attack. Gnarly video though.

The band member on the far right looks a heck of a lot like Fred Armisen.
