Roger Ebert interview/profile in "Esquire"
« on: February 16, 2010, 10:07:44 PM »
Hey everyone,

I know a lot of people have already read this, but just in case, I strongly recommend it. This is, no joke, one of the best profiles I've ever read. I've always liked Roger Ebert, and I have a completely new respect for him. The man is a giant.

Absolutely. He also has the best feed on Twitter, IMO.

I checked this out earlier today. I really didn't know the extent of his illnesses until I read this. Very moving and well-done.

That photo is pretty rough.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Yeah if you looked at that photo not knowing anything about the article you would be hard pressed to know who that is.

Me too. About a billion years ago on the interweb, which is like a blip in real time, Ebert actually read and liked a movie website me and this dude had ... he told us so, and it meant a shitload to us. He had no reason to do so, career-wise.

He gets a lifetime pass for giggling through the entire scriptwriting process of the Russ Meyer movies he worked on ... not only did he write that horseshit, but he laughed the whole time he did it. And, apparently slept with whichever Russ Meyer women would allow it.

what he's doing now? Incredible. His blog is first rate, and his twitter feed is just as good, about different stuff, not just things he's written, but stuff he likes, or whatever silly nonsense he's found on the internet.

The guy is top shelf. Balls to you if you disagree.
Remember how he couldn't stop his leg?

Hey, that's cool!

I hear his film festival is really fun too.

I picked this book of his off a stack of free books once. It cracks me up:

What with all the brouhaha in the past few months about healthcare reform in the U.S., this article made me appreciate that if he lived in any other country in the world, he'd probably already be dead.

Also: he's an awesome dude.

If you really want to have that discussion it's going to get really ugly and really personal really fast.

Believe me, I'm all for socialized medicine, and further, I'm certainly not trying to stir anything up here. All I meant was that I was amazed at the treatment he's received, and it occurred to me that this is the sort of thing people mean when they talk about "the best system in the world."

That is a great article-- I didn't know how bad off he was, and for him to still have a positive attitude given all of the stuff he's been through... man. It sounds really cornball to call it inspiring, but it sorta is.

I don't think it's cornball at all. I was really inspired by this.
