The Best Show episode guide
« on: April 03, 2010, 07:48:56 PM »
Hi folks!

I've started up a new Best Show episode guide / recap site, the aim is to have a full recap of every episode in the WFMU archive. I decided to make it after seeing people asking "does anyone know when..." and no one being able to answer (the 'Spike Lee' story being the one that pushed into action). I hope the site can be useful for finding those moments in shows that you really enjoyed but can't remember when they happened.

The site is currently located at http://bestshow.alackof.com/ but I might look into getting a proper domain name for it sometime in the future (I'd also happily move it to be hosted on friendsoftom.com if Tom wants to do that).

There's only one show covered at the minute and it's going to take a long time for me to flesh out the archives. I'd really appreciate some help in recapping the shows so the guide can start being useful sometime soon (all guides will be credited to the recapper). Left to my own devices, it'll probably take around two years to recap all the archived shows. There's a big (scary) list of all the shows still to be added here http://bestshow.alackof.com/uncatalogued/uncatalogued-shows . If no one helps then I'll happily keep plodding along by myself and hopefully it won't take too long until I can at least get the past year's worth of shows covered.

Anyways, I hope the site's of use to some people.

Cheers,
John.

P.S. I wasn't sure which board to post this in, if I've put it in the wrong place (sorry!) can an admin please move it or let me know and I'll move it (assuming that's possible).

You are taking on a mighty task.  Omar has been distracted lately.  But, I'd recommend getting in touch with him before getting too involved in your endeavor.

It's a big task but I've been thinking about doing it for a little while now. I was going to start working my way through the archives anyway so I might well take notes while I'm listening.

I'll get in touch with Omar in the morning (it's 2:25am here now), thanks.

The FOT community seems determined to spread out all the TBSOWFMU coverage between a whole bunch of people. It again highlights the need for a proper Wiki, methinks. But who knows if that will ever happen.

John, your project sounds like an admirable endeavour, but before you work too hard on it, bear in mind that these sites already exists:

Scratchbomb's Best Show Log: currently covering 2000, 2001, and 2002
Buffcoat's Newbridgctionary: covering all JW appearances on the show

And of course, the Big Daddy of them all, Omar's one-of-a-kind recaps over at Recidivism.

We should all recap all the shows independently.  It would be like Rashomon.

With the max force web guys on this board, it would be a fairly easy thing to set up a wiki.  For instance, I have a server, and can just click a button to have my choice of MediaWiki, WikkaWikki, or PmWiki.  (I'd go with PmWiki, since it saves everything as plain text files, which is pretty great.)

I think the main reason this hasn't happened, is that people want to wait for the official word.

Setting up the infrastructure of a wiki scares me, cause I don't know the first thing about how it's done. If some FOT Tech Force set it up, however, I'm sure there's more than a few of us willing to provide the content.

I don't think we need an official word. Make it "fan"/unofficial then.

Omar's recaps are awesome and far more entertaining than mine will be. I'm looking to do something more technical and detailed, the timestamps being an important part of that. I'd never seen Scratchbomb's recaps, those are exactly the style I had in mind. If they had the caller's names, they'd be perfect.

I hadn't thought of doing a wiki, that sounds like a pretty good idea. There's the FOTpedia, but that seems to be dead now. The website I've set up is built on WordPress, it's probably not the best platform for this sort of thing but it's what I know, I've never dealt with wikis before. It's fully searchable and fairly easy to update. I was thinking of adding profile pages sometime in the future for the Wurster characters, regular guests, etc. and that wouldn't be difficult either (just time consuming). I've put form on the site to make it easy for people to submit new guides and I'll be making backups available in case I disappear / go crazy.

Saying that, the new website didn't take long to build and I'd happily abandon it if someone has a better idea for an easier-to-use and more collaborative system. I don't care if I don't host it, I just want a place where people can easily find their way through the show's massive history of callers, topics, guests, etc. The wiki idea sounds good, but I'm a little concerned that wikis are often quite messy looking. I've tried to keep the site I built quite simple and clean.

johnintheuk, I like your setup (using saved searches instead of a brittle system like tags),and I like the minimal design, but I think a wiki makes more sense for collaborative editing, and there are enough OCD FOTs that would participate.

Pmwiki allows you to set up a single "edit" password which is the simplest approach if there's going to be a small, dedicated core of editors.  (You can set it so that people have to "sign" their edits.) The general public is then read only.

I don't think it's a good idea to have this on my server because of its ugly-ass URL (and also, I've never hosted anything really "public" with it so I don't know how reliable they (Bluehost) are), but if anyone wants to see how easy Pmwiki is I set one up in about half an hour.  I changed like two variables, uploaded a logo, added a single extra.

http://bergmayer.info/wiki

The edit password is: f6aVgZRRFs2Plh

I think the default look is pretty clean; the challenge with a wiki is just organizing it.  You usually want to keep things as simple as possible, and not set up a new page for every last thing.  (Almost every "character" and "regular caller" should just be on one page instead of scattered on various pages, for instance.  One of the problems with the FOTpedia is that it went down the overly-complicated path.  This makes content too hard to find, it creates the possibility of orphan pages, and it makes everything really hard to maintain or reorganize.)

I actually just setup a wiki myself Friday night. Yes, I stayed in on a Friday night to code.

If I can be of any help, even if it's setting up the template or wiki skin, let me know.

Still working out the kinks (damn those Infobox extensions) but you can see mine here:

I've been longing for the return of the FOTpedia for years, as I think it can be a great, living resource along the lines of the johnintheuk/scratchbomb approach compared to the Recidivism recaps, which are not that great for quick searching and increasingly erratic/non-existent post-2008. (I hope to complete the recaps of the March marathon shows before the next Olympics.) I believe all of the old FOTpedia material is at least semi-retrievable via archive.org, which is good because I (and others) spent many hours feeding material from the recaps and other sources into it.

In terms of the Wiki, it seems like there could be a page for each installment that would be a general rundown of the show a la the johnintheuk/scratchbomb work, and then go from there.  For example, in the general rundown, it would note that Beatles Milt Mortner called at x time with a brief description of the call, and then you could click to a page for Beatles Milt Mortner.  As yesno mentioned, the organization can be difficult to sort out, especially in a collaborative editing venture.  Then again, as far as I recall, the death of the FOTpedia was purely a technical one -- it broke and nobody fixed it.  I don't think it was ever abandoned due to any sort of aversion to its organization. I intended to continuing adding/revising material 4life. As for what gets its own page, I definitely see value in, for example, having a page for each Wurster character.  I would also think people like Petey, Fredericks, Officer Tom, Julie from Cincinnati, Purple Shirt, Paycheque, Spike, and other notables would get their own page, but not necessarily every regular caller.  It would be a judgment call on a lot of stuff, but that would be part of the fun -- to see if you could build a worthy standalone page for some Best Show-related thing.  If someone wants to due a Wiki page for Bonnie from GA or Captain's Donuts, then have at it.  Keep in mind that I've written over 1 million words about The Best Show so I tend to side with completism when it comes to documentation.  Perhaps the more important issue is being consistent within a page for characters/Newbridge places/callers/etc. In the old FOTpedia, the organization tended to vary depending on who did the entry.

I noticed that johnintheuk cited Tom's music set for this past week's show, which is a good idea for any Miss Wiki-ish project since people have been clamoring for those for a long time.  I assume if we ever compiled Tom's playlists, they could probably be added to The Best Show's WFMU page.  I'm sure some station volunteer would enter all the data in exchange for a nice gift basket of fudge and a few lavender pizzas.

Sarah's Rashomon idea is also intriguing ...

Did you see that you're listed under the "mutant" section, Fredericks?

Wouldn't it make the most sense just to fix Fotpedia and take it from there, rather than reinventing the wheel?
