So, on the top half of the bracket, Brazil has a fairly clear path to the finals.  Who are they going to meet there out of Argentina, Germany, and Spain?  My heart says Argentina, but my head says Germany.  I would love to see Maradona and Messi's madcap style rewarded over the more measured approach of the other teams.  But, I fear that Argentina's defense will not be able to stand up to Spain or Germany.

What about the Netherlands?  They seem legitimate.

I'd love to see Paraguay win though.  I'm a big Francisco Solano Lopez fan.

Holy moly,  I am excited for the Argentina-Germany match.  Germany, to me, has been one of the pleasant surprises--with their young players like Oezil, they have been more of an attacking team than some German teams I remember.  On the other side, Tevez and Messi are so much fun to watch.

I am still backing the Dutch but Brazil looks like the team to beat.

I am not sold on Spain so far -maybe because it seemed like they were trying to not only outscore but out dive Ronaldo and his teammates yesterday.

The Netherlands have played very well against some fairly decent opponents, but I don't think they could beat any of the big four left in the competition.  I haven't seen them dominate the play as much as Germany or even Spain.  There was an interesting article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2010/jun/29/world-cup-letter-from-netherlands) in The Guardian about the team.  that being said, it would be great to see them upset Brazil, but I don't see that happening.

Spain has done very well, but their success seems mainly due to David Villa.  If he has an off night, Torres hasn't shown yet if he can step up in this tournament.

I agree about Germany, they have been very exciting to watch.  Dynamic offense, organized defending, and youth have made them so different than the German teams of old.  Not to mention the fact that their best player is a 20 year old of Turkish ancestry.

Here's my ranking of the 8 teams left, based on how they've played in the World Cup only:

1. Germany
2. Argentina
3. Brazil
4. Spain
5. Netherlands
6. Uruguay (the Forlan/Suarez tag team have produced some beautiful goals)
7. Ghana
8. Paraguay

I read Soccernomics recently.  Now I know who Luther Blissett is.

I found it really interesting, much better than Moneyball which it is comparable to.  A nice companion piece to the World Cup.

Is there a soccer equivalent to "Watching Baseball Smarter"?

Well, shut my mouth!  Heartbreaker for Ghana today as well.  Two excellent games today, in what was supposed to be the less interesting bracket.

Who wrote that Ghana-Uruguay game? Cameron Crowe?

It was too much.

Just like intentional fouls in basketball or other things like that, I find that handball unsportsmanlike. Why do you play an entire game if you're just going to allow a team to manipulate the rules in desperation in the end. Some would call it strategy, I'd say they've lost the plot of what sports are supposed to be.

Well, it was a desperate act, certainly unsportsmanlike, which is why he was sent off and Ghana was awarded a penalty. The circumstances were extreme - last kick of the game - but there's really no way to argue that Suarez 'should' have kept his arms down for sportsmanlike reasons. "Oh well, we lost, but at least we did the right thing there at the end." He did what he did and was sent off for it. And it was probably more of a reflex than a conscious decision anyway.

To argue that it was a conscious effort by Uruguay to manipulate the rules seems absurd to me - Gyan had scored two penalties in the tournament prior to this last-second one, so the odds were clearly in Ghana's favor to score and win the match. But alas, he missed. And the shoot-outs went Uruguay's way too.

Great match. Uruguay will be severly handicapped in the semi though (possibly against Spain) (EDIT: they're facing Holland, obviously). Both Lugano (the captain, out with injury) and Suarez are out, and possibly more - didn't notice if anyone got a yellow card which will rule them out of the next match.

"The Hand of God now belongs to me. Mine is the real Hand Of God," said Suárez. "I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it. There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought 'It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament'.

"Now we are in the semi-finals although I was very sad because no one likes to be sent off. The celebration afterwards was impressive, but very quiet because nobody gave us a chance but, with courage, we move forward."

Well, he doesn't feel bad about it.

I think the rule for the World Cup this year has been "Think this game is going to be a stinker and that one will be great? Think again, you footballadummy."

I had the third worst score this past round and managed to advance. My first knockout round wasn't so hot either. And now I'm already down 0 to -3 to Martin since I needed to make 5 transfers.
