Scams and Flams! (Does anyone have any Amway tapes?)
« on: June 10, 2010, 04:14:09 PM »
I am curious to know if any of you have ever had encounters with Amway or other Multi-Level-Marketing scams (or scams in general). And if any of you have access to Amway tapes, please PM me!

Has anyone else seen the Amway commercials they've been running lately? Flim-flammery!
Too soon?

These aren't exactly the training or self-motivation tapes that I think you're looking for, but if you have the stomach for it, here's Pat Boone entertaining at an Amway convention: http://www.wfmu.org/365/2003-02.shtml

(Go down a little more than halfway through the list. The first half is kind of Pat's "Okie from Muskogee" for lumpen tools; the second half is more specifically Amway-related)

And here's Paul Harvey's keynote address to another Amway convention: http://www.ubu.com/outsiders/365/2003/178.shtml

I have an intro tape, somewhere.  It only mentioned Amway twice, each time as part of a list of successful companies.

Spell-check doesn't recognize Amway.  Excellent.

Neither shall I.

My cousin is married to an Amway rep (she also has five kids, whom [sorry, Andy] she home-schools).  I haven't talked to her for twenty or so years, though, so I think she might take it amiss if I contacted her for details about the racket.

I've had several encounters with Amway. They always leave me feeling like I have just been molested.

One night when I was in grad school, I got a call at home from a random guy who I had barely met at work. He was very conversational, asking how I was doing, what I had going on that night. Really strange, since I didn't know him. He was around 50 years old, and I was 23 at the time, which made it even weirder.

Finally, he says, "You ever work much on the internet? I have a great opportunity for you." (This was in 1999).

I said, "Um...yeah. I am familiar with the internet."

He proceeds to explain this wonderful business opportunity where basically I would open my own web storefront and sell products. "Great, proven products," he said.

I asked him point blank, "Is this Amway?"

He said, "Yeah, I am affiliated with Amway."

I told him I wasn't interested and hung up the phone.

I've had two other encounters like that, except they were in public. I was shopping at Best Buy one time, noticed some guy watching me, and then he starts with the same thing. "You ever work on the internet?" They have some kind of canned speech.

I don't know what I do to attract these cretins, but they're out there, and they are scary.

My family got suckered a couple times by it when I was a kid. The weirdest part is indeed the mythology of the creator and the concepts of "success" and going "triple diamond" (I think that's the term) when you get enough other suckers underneath your pyramid. They sold a board game and we played it once as kids, and even that was lame. My Dad woke up when they took a group trip to the founders house and only the highest level people were allowed in. Something about standing in the desert being locked outside of a house made it clear for Dad.

One of my old housemates got suckered by a money gifting scheme that was supposed to be about women helping other women achieve their dreams. It seemed especially dirty -- oh you don't want to participate? Well, I guess you hate women and think they shouldn't be successful.

No Amway, but I remember my parents involved in some Aloe-Vera products ... oh, I wouldn't call it a scam, but it was definitely some sort of shady pyramid deal. This would have been int he mid-70s, when ANYTHING went.

Oh, also Tupperware.

There was a pyramid scheme in town about ten years ago that caught a lot of women in its web.  Some went to jail.  A friend of mine tried to get me to participate.  I did not.

I know some ladies who are really mad at you, sir.  Even though it was their own greedy fault that they fell for the con.
