i recently acquired a copy of Ram (vinyl) through a gentleman with whom i have a crush on after talking about the best show and the Ram tribute album+the Ram album itself.  what a sweet guy.

i buy LPs mostly, CDs when it calls for, and cassettes (like the last NoBunny) when available.  old cassette and CD collections i have sold more than i can count (with regret), but the records have never willingly left me.  now, when certain circumstances occured, i did lose my entire record collection and had to start from scratch, but i was mostly pissed about the lost memories and not the records.

You still have the memories, Baron.  Otherwise you wouldn't be talking about them.

I buy vinyl, and purchase mp3s online. These days I buy CDs very rarely, and only when I really want to support a specific label or act (which is partly why a majority of the CDs I've bought the last couple of years are comedy albums - Stereolaffs, AST Records, etc).

This is exactly my situation too- though I admit I'll illegally download mp3s of something I've already purchased on vinyl.

Sometimes I look at all my records and realize how impractical they are (I don't even bring a turntable to school, where I actually am the majority of the time), but I just like them, and a lot of what I have probably isn't available for sale as mp3s anyway.

You've won my heart, Fredericks. I'm your #1 fan for life.

I always regretted it too, but now I'm actually glad I funded my college weekends by selling CDs because I've bought almost everything back for far less than I sold them for. I wonder how much places that buy and sell used CDs purchase them for these days. I can't imagine anything more than 50 cents for anything that wasn't released in the past couple months or Beatles cds.  I didn't sell them all at once but I bet I got at least 1000 dollars for my collection back in '00-'02 and I think I'd be lucky getting $150 if I sold the same collection today.

Paul, there is a very good record store somewhat close to Philly that has used records, although not a huge selection,  in Princeton, NJ. Princeton Record Exchange.  Worth a short drive.

Thanks for the tip!

I don't know if it's because everybody had them or nobody wants them anymore but every single McCartney vinyl record can be found in the 50 cent bins around here consistently. I have about 2-3 copies of many of them because I just buy them if they look like their in better shape than the copies I already have.

True, at one point I had 4 copies of Wings at the Speed of Sound. Never came across RAM tho, but my aunt has it and I'm trying to hint at it being a birthday gift.

I buy vinyl because paying for mp3s seems like a rip-off. You give real money over in exchange for virtual goods, an intangible product... CDs are just mp3s in a nice case and I can get that quality for free. So, my method is listen for free online to everything before I buy it on vinyl.

I'll blindly buy from labels/bands I trust, otherwise a lot of my collecting amounts to chasing down sweet items for the sake of posterity. Yesterday I found a 1st UK pressing of The Wipers Youth of America!!

Is there a good dollar bin at this place? My mom is coming to visit and rent a car and we might make the trip.

Columbus used bins are lousy with McCartney/Wings stuff. It sounds like I just need to start picking up every copy of Ram I see to send to folks here.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Paul, Princeton Record Exchange is great! Definitely worth a trip.  There are lot's of great places in Philly too, though. There's Beautiful World Syndicate in South Philly and West Philly.  Tons of used records at both locations. Long in the Tooth on Sansom between 20th and 21st always has interesting used stuff in their new arrival bin.  It's not a very large place but it's shocking how many used records and CD's they squeeze in there.  The owners are very nice people as well.

Jeez, all this talk of dollar bins makes me wish we had those in Calgary... I'm not sure you can buy ANYTHING for cheaper than 4 or 5 bucks...

If you're ever near Nashville, there's a billion old records at the Great Escape, many for $3 or less, a large portion of which have been there since the 70s. It's near the Vandy campus.
