Dog help
« on: July 16, 2010, 01:05:01 PM »
I'm dog-sitting this week and I need a few pointers with this little monster.

I'm trying to take him on walks, but he gets 50 ft from the door and just stops. He hits a wall where he decides, "nope, this is far enough" and I can't get him to budge. I know he goes on walks since I've gone on long walks with him and his owner, and Gatsby (dog) and I get along great, but I can't get him out and about.

He's got to get some exercise, because he is rotting up the place and I know a good run around a dog park will clear that up a little.

I have to go because he's starting to barf everywhre. This is probably a cue.

Can you try standing at the open door with a treat?
Remember how he couldn't stop his leg?

Tell him you are taking him to see the green light.

AC is right. Treats. If you can find Zukes, they are perfect for a dog reward. Nice and small and (apparently) delicious.

Or, if you know of another dog, see if you can borrow it. Sometimes dogs do better when they are with other dogs. pack mentality and all.

This is the most antisocial dog ever. Every dog that stops to sniff him gets the high hat. This is a diva-dog.  It's kind of funny to me though.

He's also allergic to everything. There isn't much I can give him, and I'm not willing to take chances on picking out something when I have no idea what's going put him in jeopardy.

Have you tried running?  Most dogs will join in out of instinct.

Or fear that you'll strangle them.

You are absolutely right, Fredricks. We run around the apartment based on that same strategy.

He's a French Bulldog, and he's that built for, well…anything, but I will give that a shot this evening.

PS. It's not that kind of leash. It's more of a harness. I know to do that much.

Precisely what I was going to suggest.

We've dog-sat for our friends' two French bulldogs and they don't really have much use for exercise. They are bred to be lapdogs and that's what they like to do. Also, I think they tend to overheat easily because of their flat faces & noses, so be careful about overdoing it. If the dog is telling you he doesn't want to walk, I wouldn't force him.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

20 minutes supposed to be the ceiling for how long he's supposed to walk. He's pretty lazy to begin with, so that makes sense. If he okay, I'm okay then. It leaves more time for this kind of nonsense.

Thank you everyone.
