2010 Album of the Year Discussion....
« on: October 28, 2010, 10:31:54 PM »
I think we can all agree that the album of the year is Lisbon by the Walkmen.  What albums are in the running for second through tenth place?
Breakfast- I'm havin' a time
Wheelies- I'm havin' a time
Headlocks- I'm havin' a time
Drunk Tank- not so much a time
George St.- I'm havin' a time
Brenda- I'm havin' a time
Bingo- I'm havin' a time
House Arrest- I'm still havin' a time

I cast a vote for Admiral Fell Promises by Sun Kil Moon and Have One On Me by Joanna Newsom, though I feel I might be a little lonesome in those choices.

Would someone please compile a list for me of everything released this year? Only then can I make my choices.

Make sure you don't miss any or my picks will become moot!

Voyagers of Legend by The Young kinda came from out of nowhere and knocked me over. I found it through a recommendation on Andrew Earles's blog, where he calls it the best album of the last five years. I wouldn't go that far, but it is pretty good.

Other releases I liked this year:

Brothers - Black Keys
Brought Low - Third Record
Dungen - Skit I Allt
Ty Segall - Melted
Fucked Up - Year of the Ox
Mount Carmel - s/t
Neil Young - Le Noise
Budos Band - III
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - The Brutalist Bricks
Wooden Shjips - Vol. 2 (technically a comp but it was all new to me, so I'm including it)

Best standup album of the year has to be Shakespeare by Anthony Jeselnik.
I'll probably go into the wee hours.

Of the very little new music I've listened to this year, I've liked the Intelligence and Eddy Current Suppression Ring albums.

I look forward to being educated by this thread and the invaluable end-of-the-year list by Evan 'Funk' Davies.

Grinderman - Grinderman 2

Haven't listened to this one enough yet but I think it's some of his best work in years.

I think the Janelle Monae album is pretty amazing, but also very frustrating. For me, the 'rock songs' (for lack of a better word; my apologies to all rockers) completely ruin the flow of the album. They are almost unlistenable to me. Of course, I'm saying this as someone who is pretty much allergic to rock and/or roll.

Contenders:

Eluvium - Similes
Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lovers
Actress - Splazsh
Scuba - Triangulation
Seu Jorge and Almaz
Four Tet - There Is Love in You

Shockingly I haven't gotten my hands on the Flying Lotus yet.
