Goodnight Captain Beefheart

Dang, I'm not sure if I'd heard he had MS.

Remember how he couldn't stop his leg?

That's a bummer. :(

I always idolized him as a kid.

I have been moping all morning.  I didn't get into him until later on...like five years ago.  But ever since, his albums have been the first I have sought out at every record store and record fair.

His song "Circumstances" and "Owed T'Alex" are two of my favorite songs of all time.  And this recording is probably one of the greatest things EVER.

He stopped making music a long time ago, Wikipedia says his last album of original material was released in 1982. He did some exhibitions as a painter in the 90s and 2000s.

I am curious about the "complications of multiple sclerosis" that killed him.  I'm not positing conspiracy here; I just want to know what they were.

i'm no expert, but i know several people with MS. all MS is, is a series of complications (hence the "multiple".) something in the body eventually fails, so there's nothing mysterious here. except this fucking awful, mysterious disease. (and that's all i know.)

Honey, I know what MS is; I've got it.  Hence my curiosity here:  this is one of my possible futures.

RIP

Beefheart was one of the few musicians who was deserving of the "genius" accolades bestowed upon him.

He'll be missed.

As a huge Zappa fan in HS, I was also by law a huge Captain fan. I think the reason why his stuff gets more cred than Zappa's is because it seems to come from a more real, less calculated place. As strange as his music and lyrics were, there's something undeniably organic about them.

I had that same experience listening to "Trout Mask Replica" that nearly everyone has. The first time I heard it, I admired its ambition but couldn't get into it. Then I gave it another shot and it grew on me a little. And in the next listen it grew on me some more, until finally I realized how amazing it was.

We won't get another one like him. I'm not sure we got the first one.
