It sounds like a real barrel of laughs.

I know I'm a little late on this one, but I didn't see another thread.

"Trier has said that he considers all of his previous films to end happily, and that this will be the first with an unhappy ending."  :o

I'm beginning to think that he may just be pulling our legs.  After he's blown up the planet with this one, maybe he can start on the next part of his career - collaborations with Harmony Korine.

Love the idea of this film so much. Of course Lars would film the destruction of Earth.  BRING IT ON!

Also, apparently after this he will have filmed wedding scenes with both generations of Skarsgards, for those keeping track.

Sure, the subject matter is surprising/fitting for Von Trier, but I'm surprised that Charlotte Gainsbourg is coming back for more.  Is she the first  lead actress to return to a Von Trier movie  (or just one of very few)?

Surprising?

Is this in reference to my surprising/fitting subject matter remark?  If so, the emotional turmoil / psychological torture ---> fitting, the seemingly sci-fi-ish destruction of the world ----> surprising.

Perhaps more surprising from the wikipedia link is Von Trier's claim that all his previous films had happy endings.

 Some recent examples:

Dancer in the Dark - Bjork's character lets herself be executed, though her son does regain his sight.
Dogville - Nicole Kidman's character learns she is the child of a criminal from whom she has fled in disgust/contempt/fear (?).  She rejoins him.  Oh, and the whole town of Dogville is brutally murdered, with her participation.
Antichrist - In part, He kills and then cremates Her.

I just think the end of the world is right up his alley, so your "surprising" surprised me.

He sure is partial to tortured/torturing women, isn't he?  I mean, I love the guy, but, lordy, he has got some complicated feelings about the ladies.  Goodness me.
