Thou shalt not blame The Doors the band for the sins of Oliver Stone, Ray Manzarek, or even Jim Morrison individually. If you compare the Doors to any number of anonymous psychedelic groups of the time, you can see why they were, at least occasionally, inspired and weird and ever-so-slightly transcendent of their genre. It is my conviction that if Love had actually toured and not gotten addicted to Heroin and gone to jail, and had gotten an inflated and ridiculous movie made about them, they'd be equally as irritating as The Doors, if not like 5 times more. Can you imagine if Arthur Lee actually HAD a voice in the popular consciousness? What a nightmare! Plus, Iggy Pop is on record as being inspired by The Doors primarily because of how much they sucked when he saw them play at some college in Michigan, which means that The Doors are marginally responsible for punk rock.
