Is VA supposed to be a acronym for various?

Yes, various artists

I hate to say it but in my old age ive found myself listening to more singles instead of albums. This might be a good thread for me to discover some good stuff.

All the Love, Peace, & Poetry comps are pretty great, but this one's my favorite:
Oh, good heavens. I didn’t realize. I send my condolences out to the rest of the O’Connor family.

The Numero label's "Eccentric Soul" series of comps had some good stuff, lots of regional and small label 60s & 70s soul/r&B.  I'm a fan of the "ABCs of Kid Soul" installment, which is all kid groups and Jackson 5 knockoffs.  Another compilation series I enjoy is the (now out of print?) "Dream Babes", which focused on female singers and girl groups of the 50s & 60s.

Also, if you look through the old playlists for Cherry Blossom Clinic and Evan Funk Davies they often pull from some good comps - I think that's how I first found out about some of the recent glam reissue compilations, like "Glitterbest", "Velvet Tinmine", etc.

And of course I have to plug "CD86".

You really can't go wrong with any Numero release. They're stellar. Titan: It's All Pop is a great power pop collection.

yeah, Numero is always a smart choice

I like the Fading Yellow comps, many great tracks despite occasional baroque cheesiness
The Easy Tempo series is also worth checking out
and Andy Votel's releases are pretty cool too

After viewing the website, I'll definitely give some of the Numero releases a listen.

I'll also second the recommendation of the Cazumbi compilations.

Any of those. I really like vol 8 the best. There is also a "best of" which is a good jumping off point.

I posted this a while back and they are free to download, 12 volumes of Garage rock through the ages.

Along the bubblegum tip, try to track down a comp called bubblepop: rare bubblegum & psych. Also, this site is the best for that sorta stuff: http://psychcracklepop.blogspot.com

The Saturday Night Fish Fry is AMAZING, but sadly out of print. You might have to settle for the New Orleans Funk Vol 1 & 2 comps on souljazz, which honestly, is hardly settling.
