Help, I'm going to Atlanta.

Any FOT living in or having visited Atlanta care to throw down some recs on fun things to do/see there? My friends are currently making a list of tourist-friendly sites, but I wanna take it off the grid (if possible) and actually do something cool.

Any help is appreciated. I'll be there end of March/start of April-ish.

I live here now. It's definitely OK!

If you're into live music, there's the Earl (www.badearl.com) and the 529 (529atl.com) and Drunken Unicorn.

I would avoid Little Five Points at all costs, unless you wanna record shop (Criminal Records or Wax and Facts) or book shop (A Cappella). If you enjoy adult beverages, and need to drink away the stink of gutterpunks, visit The Porter Beer Bar while in that area.

Lotsa food here. LOTSA. Unfortunately, a lot of it is overhyped/overpriced/etc. If you need specific recommendations, let me know what kind of stuff you enjoy.

The High Museum has a Cartier-Bresson exhibit through the end of May. The botanical gardens are pricy but worth it if you are into flowers and such.

You can play Spot Henry Owings, which is the ATL spin on Austin's Spot Harry Knowles.

I won't repeat Scot but he definitely hit some of the hot spots.

Breakfast:
Gato Bizco (Candler Park)

Rise-n-Dine (Emory Village)

Dinner/Late Night:
Manuel's (Poncey Highland): An Atlanta Institution. I go here multiple times a week.

Brick Store (Decatur): Insane Beer Selection - the best in Atlanta. Although, like Scot, I prefer the Porter because it is closer and less beer nerds.

Noni's (Old 4th Ward): Good atmosphere. Nice People but some nights it can be crowded with young hipsters.

Spots To Visit:
If the weather's nice, The Starlight Six Drive-In.

Oakland Cemetery is a fun walk on a nice afternoon.

East Atlanta at Night (Scot pointed out highlights there)

Little Five for the porter, el myr, criminal records, and a capella books.

And Scot is right about the food. There's lots of good stuff but some of the insanely cheap and good ethnic stuff is a little bit of a drive away.

All of that said, go to the High and catch a show at The Earl. Kurt Vile is playing April 7th there, don't know if you'll be there for that.

I'm moving to Stone Mountain in April (in Augusta now), and this seems like a useful thread. Maybe there could be some FOT meetups at relevant concerts or comedy shows, the Laughing Skull Lounge always has good people coming through.

I'm in the new house - found a place in East Cobb.  Loving it so far.

Hey y'all.  Atlanta Native here.  There's tons of cool stuff to do, but I'm going to give you some stuff you can actually use in your life.

- Star Bar (Little 5 Points) has the best comedy show in Atlanta every Monday night.  It's open mic and some big-timers stop by once in a while.

- Little's Food Store (Cabbagetown) It's a small grocery store with the best burgers I've ever had. Cut their fries in-house.  They'll even let you crack open a Coors Light while you eat and read the latest Stomp and Stammer.

-Main Street Barber Shop (Tucker) It's a legit barbershop. $13 haircut $8 shave.  I'm talking hot towel on a reclining barber chair shave then a cold towel then some balms.  It's a great experience and the people there are friendly. Closed Sundays

- Midtown Cleaners & Laundry (Poncey Highlands) Lots of laundry machines with dry cleaners attached. The owners are nice and might give you a cigarette if you need one.  Across the street is Manuels Tavern where you can have a beer and a hotdog while your clothes are drying. And there's a King of Pops stand close by most times of the year.

-Toyotechs (Chamblee)  If you have a toyota or lexus or whatever, these guys are awesome.  They fixed a problem on my car no one else could seem to find....for free.  I get all of my work done there.

-Parking (Midtown)  If you ever find yourself in midtown and need to park, there's a sustainable something-or-the-other company called Southface that'll let you park your car there at night.  Be respectful and have your car moved by morning. Don't ruin this for us.
