New Beasties video lifting from Tom's NP video?
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:07:19 AM »
Although this link is just a trailer for an upcoming long-form video for the new Beastie Boys single "Make Some Noise", the "recognizable-actors-as-band-members" thing seemed a little close to home.

And here's Tom's New Pornographer's video for comparison:

Am I just having a knee-jerk response? Or is my icky feeling justified?

there's been buzz about this beastie boys thing since early December. it was planned, shot and finished before or at the same time as Moves as far as I can tell and it premiered at Sundance, before Moves hit the internet. looks more like great minds thinking alike

it's also clearly totally different.

so cool it.

I think our real question should be do the Beastie Boys Rock, Rot or Rule?

Yeah, this article is datelined December 10th. Haven't checked out the Beasties thing yet ... sounds fun, but I feel like the impact of this type of thing gets too diluted by extensive pre-hyping. The good thing about Tom's methods is he'll sneak something right up on ya. Like Bugs Bunny.

I feel like the "recognizable-actors-as-band-members (in a music video)" thing is not without past precedent. But I can't think of any examples right now. Anybody?

I think they have dabbled in all three over the course of their career.  For example:

Rock: Their early hardcore stuff
Rot: Their later instrumental albums. I find them pretty pretentious and uninteresting.
Rule: Paul's Boutique

Yay JSBX, Yay Zach, Booooooo Rembrandts. The Friends cast looks really lame when they hold guitars.

This Beastie Boys thing looks AWFUL.  Kevin Smith awful.

I fear you may be right, Chris L. I've liked most of their music thru Hello Nasty, but those dudes have a long history of thinking they're funnier than they actually are. Now they're dragging a bunch of other celebs down with them.

I'm no (rap) music scholar, but I think Jesse Thorn is probably correct in saying that the beastie boys don't so much rap as yell over beats.  That said, Licensed To Ill totally rules.  One of the few "rap" albums that sounds awesome playing on cassette through a tinny car stereo.

I will also say that the lyrics "Intergalactic - Planetary - Planetary - Intergalactic" do not count as a) lyrics and b) a song about anything to do with space.
I really don't appreciate your sarcastic, anti-comedy tone, Bro!
