I pulled this over from the Hate Pit topic. I threatened to compare Woody Allen to Martin
"Cold-sore"sese using my peculiar head-to-head match-up system. Of course, it means only as much as you want it too, but it keeps me typing when I could be out pillaging.
I have pulled my favorite 10 films from each director, and I match them up head to head. In the first 7 rounds, it is my opinion that the movies I am pairing up are of relatively equivalent worth. The match-up winner is then decided by examining what's left.
Basically of equal value
Taxi Driver v. Annie Hall
Manhattan v. Raging Bull
Crimes and Misdemeanors v. Goodfellas
Sleeper v. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Zelig v. After Hours
Mean Streets v. Hannah and Her Sisters
Husbands and Wives v. The Departed
Now, Woody wins, in my opinion, because what's left from his top ten is better than what's left from Scorsese's. Those would be
Love and Death, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Sleeper
over
The Last Temptation of Christ, The Age of Innocence, and Kundun.
But that's just me.
