REM and the Bee Gees

I did not encounter "Every Christian Lion-Hearted Man" (BeeGees) before listening to the Best Show. For some time, the chorus reminded me of something I've heard before. This morning, I may have figured it out: REM's "Flower's of Guatemala." I'm not claiming REM copied the BeeGees, or were even influenced by them. But the BeeGees chorus and REM verse strike me as in the same sonic neighborhood. Is my ear tin?
