Wow. This one's kinda tough for me. Maybe because the Beasties symbolized a sort of eternal youth and frivolity ... and I admired them for the way they distanced themselves from the boorishness of their early days (without losing their essential silliness).

And also, I thought he was doing better, healthwise ... fuck cancer.

I hate their music now but loved them when I was younger. I definitely appreciate their sense of humor.

Grand Royal Magazine was pretty terrific and one of the most influential things I've ever stumbled on. The Beasties are also largely responsible for brining the mullet into popular culture which they don't get enough credit for.

Grand Royal Magazine was pretty terrific and one of the most influential things I've ever stumbled on.

The list of Ricky Powell disses in the first edition was hilarious.  Especially the one about "your mama catching a Danny Tartabull foul tip."

As with everyone else here, I am dumbfounded by this loss. I spent no trivial part of my youth listening to them. And on top of all of this, he was a really, really good person.

I still love Hello Nasty. That album is fantastic. I listened to a lot of Grand Royal artists senior year of high school as well... Ben Lee, Sean Lennon, At the Drive In. Good music but they also had the coolest CD art (the actual disc) letting you know you were looking at a Grand Royal cd. I guess that didn't sell a whole lot of records for them...

I've been going back and listening to the old CDs. Paul's Boutique is one of my favorite things ever, but I've been enjoying hearing a lot of their other stuff again, too. I always liked him the best of the group. RIP MCA.

Paul's Boutique is still my favorite, and of course Check Your Head is amazing.

BUT To the Five Boroughs actually has some great tracks on it for such a late offering.
