Wish I could go to this, but alas it's on a Friday and I work Saturdays way up here in New Hampshire. I hope it's recorded and sold online to further benefit those harmed by Sandy. But I have a feeling this will only be experienced by those there. I hope it sells out and goes well.

Might anyone from the DC area be going?? Care to carpool with a guy who'll be staying in Brooklyn and returning on Sunday?

Just a heads up on this...tickets were sold out when I tried to get some a couple weeks ago, and the show's still listed as sold out on the Bell House's website, but it seems that they've released more and I was able to snag one last night at the link Tom posted above.

The show was a professional highlight for me. It was over three hours long and it only kept getting better. If someone who was there can express it from the POV of an audience member, that would be awesome.

Here's what happened:

Tom and Ted came out and goofed around
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists played
Chris Gethard came out and told a hilarious story
John Hodgman and Kristin Schaal auctioned off a couple items including a chance for an audience member to sing with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at the end of the show
Vance introduced Gary the Squirrel, who did a live version of Comedians Are Nuts with his guest Julie Klausner and they sang a duet of "Baby It's Cold Outside"
Hodgman and Schaal auctioned off a chance to sit in on an episode of The Best Show On WFMU
Titus Andronicus played a surprise set
Jon Benjamin and Tom talked for a bit, then Benjamin brought a porn star named Sandy Hurricane onstage and played a couple minutes of hardcore gay porn on the video screen
Tom and Ted interviewed surprise guest Brooke Shields
Hodgman and Schaal auctioned off tickets to Daily Show/Colbert/Totally Biased and Brooke Shields came back onstage to help
Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick dissected a few scenes from GODFATHER III
Hodgman and Schaal did the final auction of the night for SNL/Fallon tickets
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists came up and played "Little Dawn" with contest winner Zack singing
Andrew WK came up and played a solo keyboard song, then brought TL/Rx onstage for a couple songs, and everybody at the show came up and jumped around and sang "Louie Louie"

THE GREATEST NIGHT EVER!

Tom.

It was one of the most incredible and unique shows I've seen. A couple of the auction sections ran pretty long due to the insanely high bidding but Hodgman did a masterful job of keeping them entertaining, and much like one of the Best Show marathon shows, I think everyone felt good to see all that money raised. Everything else was pretty much gold. The Chris Elliott/Adam Resnick dissection of Godfather III clips was utterly hilarious, and my favorite thing about it was that they didn't even have to bring up Sofia Coppola to make the movie look ridiculous. Titus Andronicus blew everyone away; it was actually the first time I've seen them live, despite all the praise I'd heard, but it definitely made me hungry for more.  And I don't know how many in the crowd actually thought Jon Benjamin would show a hardcore gay porn montage at a charity event, with Tom on stage no less, but it was an amazing/uncomfortable ending to that bit.

Then there's all the wonderful people I saw/met. It all felt like a great party.

Wanted to say thank you to Tom for what was really an amazing night.  My girlfriend and I drove in from Harrisburg, PA for the show and it was everything we could have hope for.  We listen to the Best Show religiously and were so happy to have the chance to contribute to a great cause and see some of our favorite people perform.  Never would have thought I'd ever get to see Chris Elliot live, he and Adam were just so ridiculously funny. When Tom announced Titus Andronicus as surprise guests we looked at each other with dropped jaws and then thrilled as they melted everyone's faces.  Ted Leo and his band were so great and a class act as always, we've seen him perform so many times but I think it was the first time we got to hear him play "The Toro and The Toreador", and it was beautiful.  Just a couple of our favorite moments that my lovely girlfriend caught on video:

Thanks to Tom and all the FOTs we met! It was a very special night for us and we thank you all!

Audience POV recap!

-Tom and Ted got things started and Tom told a funny story about a John McEnroe (presumably) being rude at a recent Who concert. Mr McEnroe was wearing a hat in the fashion of Neil Peart.
-Ted Leo and the Pharmacists played a handful of new material that had the crowd enraptured within a few songs, in that Ted Leo sort of way.
-Chris Gethard told of his times at Weird New Jersey magazine and showed off not one, but two Smiths related tattoos. I loved his book but had not seen him in person before and was pleasantly surprised.
-All of the auctions were genuinely thrilling. As the night went on, the crowd was more lubricated and sort of ignored earlier instructions to not yell things out if they were not actually bidding. During these moments, I watched Tom, helpless to Heave Ho, and envisioned him carrying snakes from a burning pet shop, Pee Wee style.
-I was there for the Vance, and was not disappointed. Comedians Are Nuts was innovative as usual, though I wish Gary had time to dig a little deeper. Klausner/Gary rapport extends to holiday themes.
Titus Andronicus ripped skulls.
-It was a thrill to see Jon Benjamin and Tom sharing the stage. The pornography was pornographic. Not the place for prudes!
-Brooke Shields presence was strange! It seemed to raise more questions than it answered. She was very candid and a great sport. Ted Leo said it best when he said that he still chooses to believe it was her smoking the joint with HR.
-I had wondered how Chris Elliot and Adam Resnick would go over with a youngish crowd, which was silly of me. Loudest laughs of the evening so far as I could tell.
-Andrew WK/TL/Rx doing I GET WET was a highlight.

The total 30k raised was whopping. Ted Leo continues to prove to be the paragon of human decency. And obviously, Tom is never to be missed in a live setting.
