Art of the Slap on Pitchfork!
« on: June 06, 2007, 11:03:13 AM »
To circumvent my lurker status -- Pitchfork Media, the beacon of all things hipster, just gave Art of the Slap a stellar review (8.5)! And remember, Pitchfork rarely goes about a 7 on anything...

Nice work, gentlemen...

Congrats on succesfully pulling off the notoriously difficult second post.

That's a good review, and not just for the boys*, it's thoughtful and well written.

* I now refer to S and W as "the boys".

WOW
Now if only pitchfork had placed it at the very top slot on the page,

I thought that review was confusing.
The 8.5 makes total sense, but the reviewer didn't seem to have a total grasp on S&W.

And it all builds to a peak over the course of twenty-plus minutes. (Unsurprisingly, the duo ply their trade on community radio, where this kind of indulgence gets appropriate breathing room; an episode last December condensed the previous week's bit into a two-minute commercial "morning zoo" pace and it landed with a thud.)

Maybe I'm just outsnobbing Pitchfork on this one. Heh?

Bryce would approve. Obviously, you're blissfully unaware of the Grateful Dead association.

I think reviewer Nate Patrin has a solid grasp on "the boys"/The Best Show.  The above excerpt is a bit confusing in the sense that he doesn't really give the context for that condensing.  In other words, the thud landing was intentional, as Tom was reacting to criticism about the pacing of the bit the previous week and offering its bush-league alternative.

You're right about the bit that I bolded, Omar.
But I thought the reviewer made it sound like "the boys" were attempting a new style or a joke that fell flat, which anyone who listened to that segment would know otherwise.

Hopefully that review turns a bunch of fresh listeners on to the show. Anyone else feel like the boys are on the brink of stardom?

Should we spell it "the boyz" to avoid any confusion?

It seemed fair to me. You have to commit some time to an S&W bit. ADD kids won't get it. Maybe they should've mentioned that he plays Lightning Bolt.

This so-called  "Pitchfork" site is just a shameless ripoff of Shovel.com
