Led Zeppelin Reissues

http://pitchfork.com/news/54340-led-zeppelin-to-reissue-first-three-albums-with-unreleased-material/

This is an article about the first three Led Zeppelin albums being reissued. Jimmy Page did the remastering and there are bonus tracks and the article also states that all the Led Zeppelin studio albums will be re-released this way.

I hate knowing that I'll be suckered into buying the first four deluxe edition issues, only to find out that an entire box of all reissues will come later, with material not included in the first deluxe editions.  I will buy them.  There's nothing I can do about that.

The recording engineer who did the 2007 reissues admitted he thought they were overcompressed and blown out, but that's the style now. I'm curious to see what they do this time around.

I'm not too optimistic. These days, with few exceptions, "remastered" equals loud and overcompressed.

I seriously question the utility of the extra material.  If it's not just the same mix without vocals, it's a "rough" mix that is more or less identical to the final version.  When the Beach Boys did the super box set of Pet Sounds, you got to hear outtakes, live studio arrangements from Brian Wilson, or the incredible Beatles anthologies...I'm just not sure what's really here.  It almost feels like Page found "La La" and "Key to the Highway" and thought "this is plenty."  And this is coming from one of the biggest Zep fans on the planet.

Admittedly, the 69 concert is a good find.

Buyer beware: I bought the first album reissue at Target because it was $9.99. It turned out to be a single-disc version with no bonus tracks. Of course the packaging made no reference to the omission. And yes, I've learned the obvious lesson about paying for music at Target.
