Turned on to music...
« on: August 01, 2014, 05:42:36 PM »
Beyond the obvious (Big Dipper, Volcano Suns, Mission of Burma, etc.), what music have you been turned on to by listening to the Best Show?

Tom and associates really have exposed me to--or caused me to take a second-look at--more than a few musical groups and various artists.  Just wondering about others' experience...

AC Newman/New Pornographers
Monster Magnet
The Dirtbombs (I suppose some credit goes to Terre T for that one also)
Kurt Vile
Ty Segall

And Tom also helped renew my love of Led Zeppelin

That new Reigning Sound "Shattered" raises the bar even further, and it was already pretty damn high from their previous records.

For sure.

I remember the first time I heard MK on Best Show. Found his Bandcamp page and ended up emailing him to see how I could buy his record. Bought it directly from the dude and he couldn't of been nicer. Asked how I heard his music and I told him The Best Show. I doubt I was the first person to tell him I heard him on the Best Show, and he was still totally psyched to hear it. Good dude. Great albums.

The Best Show really reinvigorated my need to actively seek out and enjoy new music. I got into the best show around 2010. Before that, I was kind of in a rut with my listening habits. I liked the bands I already liked and would wait for them to release new albums. I would look at sites like Pitchfork and AVClub to recommend albums that would appeal to me but generally felt detached from everything they were praising.

Hearing Reigning Sound on the Best Show felt like being turned on to a secret world that I didn't know existed. That lead to me digging deeper into labels like Goner, Hozac, Nashville's Dead, Trouble in Mind... digging into older Homestead and Merge releases... being so excited by Spider Bags that I had to find (and equally love) DC Snipers... listening to other programs on WFMU, and generally being really stoked that so much good music was being made that I could relate to.
