iTunes Podcast Feed
« on: September 21, 2014, 12:10:35 AM »
I was on ItTunes, trying to download an episode from last summer, and it appears that the feed now only has the last 2-3 months of Best Show, along with some marathon episodes and some other randoms from as far back as 2008. What is going on?

My guess is that WFMU is only keeping a handful of podcast episodes available as downloads to conserve bandwidth. For an independent listener supported radio station, streaming 13 years worth of a 3 hour show makes a lot more sense than keeping downloadable files online (especially for a show that doesn't air on their station anymore). The show's entire run (with the exception of a few shows that were not archived) can be streamed on WFMU's website.
Or.....
If it's physical mp3 files you want, get to a certain amount of posts on the board and you can access the download section of the site. There's a thread that will point you in the direction you're after.

WFMU generally only has the ten most recent episodes of the station's shows in the podcast feed. As a new episode is added the oldest one is removed. It costs quite a bit for WFMU to archive shows on the station like they do. I can't think of another station that does it to the extent that FMU does. Shows that aren't in the podcast feed can be listened to via the pop-up player in the archives. The pop-up player works on many mobile devices though with limited functionality. A few months ago FMU completed converting the older shows from .rm to .mp3. Prior to that only the past few years could be played via the pop-up player; if you wanted to listen to the early years of Best Show you had to struggle with Real Media Player.

Not to mention on TuneIn, the Best Show feed turned into the Goddamn Dave Hill Show feed.

The flash-based pop-up player on the archives won't work with Safari on ipod/iphone, but there are plenty of free browser apps that enable flash players. I use one called "Photon" that lets me listen to any of the archives on my ipod touch and t-mobile cell phone. I've worked through a good deal of the show this way, all on my mobile devices.  There is a weird catch in that you have to tap the screen every 15 minutes to keep the flash stream going, but once I got used to that, it's given me hours of mobile Best Show.
