Begin Again
« on: November 30, 2014, 12:31:00 PM »
I started going through the archives again, starting at the very beginning, and it's been so great. I just listened to the first marathon show, the goal was only $2000 and THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT! Wow. I was also surprised at how much Jon Benjamin and Matt Walsh were on the show in the early days. I'lid forgotten how many calls they made! My poor wife, she's such a trooper, she likes the show a NORMAL AMOUNT but was tolerant of my marathon sessions during our holiday drives which was about 9 hours of listening.

Has anyone else started over? What surprised you, or what had you forgotten?

I've been listening to random years of the show since last December. Mainly because of what I was able to download archive-wise so I can listen on my phone. I didn't discover the show until late 2012, so while keeping up with current episodes, I also listened to the older episodes as far back as iTunes would keep. At some point, I will have listened to all the episodes, but I haven't gone completely in order.

It's been really interesting to hear the show at different points and notice the shape it took since it started. Listening to the first year and half, it's amazing how quickly the show found its footing, and just constantly seemed to evolve from there. I remember Tom saying towards the end that the show became something that was unrecognizable from how it started, so I've been enjoying the parts in between.

YOU'LL HEAR IT
YOU'LL DO IT
I'LL GET IT
YOU'LL LEARN IT
I'LL LIVE WITH IT
AND YOU'LL DIE WITHOUT IT."

I started from the beginning this year and am loving every minute. One thing I'm surprised by is that the show doesn't feel dated. Sure, the cultural references are old, but popular culture has never been my biggest interest.

While the tone has pretty much stayed the same, it seems Tom was more patient with callers early on.

Also, Officer Tom says "exactly" way too often.

I've been listening to the show in order and am up to the end of 2008. Between listening before bed and being in a marijuana haze, I've missed some stuff but it's been great. I'll probably finish up just as the new show is starting!

I've gone back to the beginning and made it through August 2011. The thing that occurs to me is Tom's persistence and patience. Tom and Jon knew what they wanted to do so early in the run. How many folks could honestly say they would stick to it for so many years? Not a knock on Tom or Jon's quality early on, just that you can hear how a lot of callers aren't on board and there were clearly off-air antagonists. Really remarkable. They deserve to blow the lid off 2015.

The many fantastic contributions of HJon and Matt and Andrew Earles and Jon Glaser and others early on in the BestShow are too often overlooked.

I only got into the show during Spring/Summer 2013, so when the show ended, I started listening from the beginning. I probably got through 6-9 months of the show's beginning, but then I got restless and cherrypicked either recommended episodes/moments, or episodes from distinct moments in my life (like high school/college graduation, etc). It's been kinda fun to match up where I was in life with where the show was.

I recently listened to the "Glass Houses" episode (where Danny Phipps of America's number one Billy Joel tribute band calls in) and HJon joins that conversation as a BJ tribute artist for main (and sings Captain Jack) and it is transcendent.
