Chicago show review??
« on: March 20, 2015, 01:53:25 PM »
We had to miss the show last night, as my wife was sick. I felt bad leaving her at home with the kid, and she felt bad about not being able to see the guys I'm always talking about.

Can anyone give a recap? Any guests? Best lines? Anything??

THANK YOU

OK, I'll start.

It really was everything I wanted it to be. Plenty of nods and catchphrases from the past (wwhhhaaaaattttt??????) but also some current ones as well (thank you).

Highlights include:
* Philly Boy Roy coming in from the back of the hall (by way of a disco version of the Rocky Theme). Once on stage, Roy said he wanted to sing "the bluest blues song" since he was in Chicago. With that, he and the band (locals Fake Limbs) ripped into a great version of Styx' "Renegade."
* Tom interviewed and played a basketball game with Timmy Von Trimble.
* Gary interviewed Steve Albini, John Stiratt (Wilco) and Gene Simmons.
* Tom starting a new interview podcast (Scharp Conversation) with Bruce Springsteen...who couldn't make it because his tires were slashed. So instead, Tom asked the Bruce questions to Barry Dwarkin. Barry finished the interview by singing the Newbridge song.
* l loved that the preshow music included all the theme songs Tom has used over the years (Do It, Don't Stop Now, Action). Very subtle, but very clever.
* The signed tour posters they had for sale are pretty great and were flying off the table.

Tom and Jon came out to the merch table shortly afterwards. They could not have been any nicer and appreciative. So I glad I was able to say hello,  have my copy of Rock, Rot & Rule signed and tell them how much the show has meant to me.

The only downside was that there wasn't a second Chicago show...

I'm sure I'm missing several other hilarious and entertaining bits, but I'm sure others will share.

The show was incredible. To see Tom and Jon work together in person brought tears to my eyes, from too much laughter and the realization that I was seeing something truly special.
Highlight: Tom interrupting a great performance of Gimme Gimme Gimme by making a smoothie.

Highlights:

- Tom making a smoothie on stage
- Jon's Robo joke that maybe, like, a handful of people laughed at
- "spanking the floorboards"
- "1% off your 4th order. Envelopes.net!"
- "Question one: you've made a lot of records." "Yes." "QUEESSSSSSSSSSSTION TWOOOOOOO -"

What did I say to Tom after the show? "You looked like you were having fun up there!"

TOM: NO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O! That's my worst nightmare!

Also...Tom and Jon are on the cover of this week's Chicago Reader flipside section [B Side]..

Yeah! I can't remember what he said exactly, but it was something like "I'm up here playing Robo beats..."

Later on, "Come on, you guys don't know 'Under Pressure', but you all know a song from 'The First Four Years'??"

oh man. most of my favorite moments have been mentioned, but Jon as himself as a character (in a sleeveless "beast mode" shirt and knit hiding-hat (?)) was awesome and surreal. after arguing with Tom about whether beast mode is a Seattle Seahawks thing or just when a drummer gets really into it, this happened: (i'll have to paraphrase here)

Jon: Crack a book about the NFL much? It don't sound like you do.
Tom: Oh, I don't like that.
Jon: What?
Tom: I don't like you just deploying a catchphrase to get the audience on your side.
Jon: Wait, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???

that, along with Tom popping out from backstage playing a guiro ("where'd you even get that?" "it's mine, i brought it") and Gary playing air guitar, had me dying.

The show was a really great time.  The handwritten numbering on the bottom of the (already) signed posters made me laugh out loud.  The only way I could have loved it more was if the total number produced was a lower number.

I don't get it. My number is 317/555. Were all the numbers 317 (now that would be funny). If not, hand numbered limited editions are fairly common.

My poster is #385. I'm pretty sure that it's genuinely a limited edition screenprint.

I only took a few photos that night. And here they are!

I can still hear Roy singing Styx' 'Renegade' in my head.

"Hangman is comin' down from nem gallows..."

Yeah, I have to echo the statement that the night was pretty much everything I had hoped it would be.
