This interview, combined with aenematron's first post on this board, make for a landmark day around here.

I'm so happy!

Thanks, Jouster! (And Matt, if you lurk here...)

Don't worry Jouster you did fine. But this is great to hear Tom and Wurster getting real with how they met and maybe a TV show in the works and much more. I loved it. Matt and AST radio ROCKS.

Wow.  The curtain's all the way back now, huh?  I feel like Julia Roberts in Flatliners realizing her daddy isn't a paranormal monster, just a sweet remorseful junkie.

Some thoughts:

 - Squatch and Jouster are curators - let the stigma be removed from that title. They're good guys - they win.

 - I was a bit disappointed that my "Omar is actually Wurster" theory was shot down, but I'm glad that he and Book 'em Mel-O were given props.  Honestly, it's hard to overestimate the impact that the podcast, recaps, and message board have had on the show's reach, but I guess I'm preaching to the choir here. I loved how, when Tom was fumbling for a reference, he wished that Omar was there to help him.

 - Tom's addressing the 7* fiasco was hilarious - "You hear that, Mark?" (Props nonetheless to ILIS - I say keep the poll! I promise to try to stop using the word "props".)

 - "We have given Hollywood plenty of options." That's extremely exciting! I wonder if any of the possibilities are the development deal w/ Conan O'Brien mentioned last year in the New York Times article or if that has already come and gone. I just hope that none of the options include ending the radio show.  I pray that the plan is to do both, like Kornheiser and Bill O'Leilly. Those guys are twice your age, Tom.

 - Was that Tom singing the closing theme?  I love it!

  - As a fan of both the Best Show and Never Not Funny podcasts, I would love to see a "feud". Who wouldn't love to see those two go at it?  Make it happen, curators! Their sensibilities may be different (I think Pardo would enjoy the music of New Old Skull), but if you could find a suitable topic, that'd be a hell of a grump-off.  To do my part to promote the feud, did anyone else catch Tom stifling a comment when PFT mentioned Pardo two weeks ago? Sounds like the Kid was about to take a shot! The tension was palpable!
Think I'm making that up? You make the call - (6/19/07 1:22:00 - 1:22:15)

 - "Conventions, Inc..."  Is that in the archive? Could someone show me to it?

 - The Tom leaving for Sirius episodes are amazing.  Jon is right - it was so plausible, it made for a perfect stunt.  That it started as a spontaneous goof that Tom ran with for a month makes those episodes all the more classic.

 - I loved Tom's list of funny A S T handles.  I would've added TacoSmith, didisaylabia, and Taargus Taargus.

 - When Tom, a few minutes later, mentioned my A S T handle, RoloTony, they laughed.  I'm choosing to believe the joke was merely that "RoloTony" was another example of funny A S T names, not a reference to Jouster's early comment about the zeal of video contest entrants or my tendency to be a ridiculous sycophant on both boards.  Probably just the funny name thing, right, guys?  :(  (kidding - thanks for the shout-out.)

 - Anyone know which episode of Strangers With Candy that was?

 - Tom stopped chatting at A S T and here about a month before I started chatting there and here. I understand how it's better for the show, but still... what a gyp.

 - I'm glad he mentioned DanB's hysterical "telling the mom their kid is high" call, another classic move.  The kid calls rule.  Maybe that's one of the things they're pitching?
An Adult Swim "Kids Say the Darndest Things"?  Damn... I'd edit watch that.

 - "Are you going to ask about cocaine at one point?"

 - I really wanna read "Rock School"

 - The entertainment part of my life being so thoroughly satisfied, I just might resume dating.

My turn!

- Squatch and Jouster are curators - let the stigma be removed from that title. They're good guys - they win.
A sincere "thanks" for that.  Appreciated.

Tom filled me in on one such option off the record, and I say sincerely that is sounded like a great show and also completely Scharpling and Wurster.  Cross your fingers, everybody.  Also, I don't think it's talking out of school to mention an actual project Wurster was working on - two episodes of Squidbillies, coming this year.

- Was that Tom singing the closing theme?  I love it!
Yep.  And so did I.

- "Conventions, Inc..."  Is that in the archive? Could someone show me to it?
It's in there somewhere, but take a look-see at your inbox...

- The Tom leaving for Sirius episodes are amazing.  Jon is right - it was so plausible, it made for a perfect stunt.  That it came off as a spontaneous goof that Tom ran with for a month makes those episodes all the more classic.
Again, I agree.  I think those episodes were when my fandom of the show went from 'casual' to 'full-blown.'

- I loved Tom's list of funny A S T handles.  I would've added TacoSmith, didisaylabia, and Taargus Taargus.
I'm bummed I forgot to mention Jixby Philips.  Great name, great poster.

Totally just the name, David.

- Anyone know which episode of Strangers With Candy that was?
I also want to know this.  Anybody?

- I really wanna read "Rock School"
Likewise.

What a time that was.  I honestly can't express my gratitude enough to Tom and Jon, who came straight from a long day of meetings to the recording, when they easily could've blown us off.  No bull s hit from those two - honestly two of the best guys around.  A lot of credit goes to Matt, too.  It would have been a disaster without him.  And if the show isn't funny anymore after this... I'm sorry.

Conventions Inc is in the archives not sure of the date. What i remember clearly is the next DJ cuts off the call before it ends to start their own show.

It's in the Best Show Vault (http://bestshowvault.blogspot.com/2007/04/tom-can-i-use-f-word.html).

Thanks again for the interview!

Also - I think Jon Wurster always sells himself short on the voices.  He's not an impressionist, per se, but the attitudes he gives to the characters' voices makes them into more-or-less real people, which is critical in a 45-minute comedy bit.

I randomly picked "Hot Rockin' Ronny 11" where he is initially disguising his voice as "Devlin Rothschild of Cigar Aficionado Magazine."  It's great!

And Zachary Brimstead is finally given his due as one of the great comedic characters of all time.  Hearing that bit took me from a casual fan to a devoted listener.  "Yeeess."

Thanks Jouster and Matt

I loved the discussion of how the pacing of the best show is essential to its success. Insightful topics (Sirius, Marky Ramone, formation of characters, podcast numbers) Thanks a million A S T!

I haven't given it a listen yet*, but that's unfortunate. My favorite call was the "Lady Wainsworth's Desires" call. I love the ones that skirt the line between vomit-inducing and pants-wettingly funny stuff. There's something Freudian about that.

*Podcasts, guys! It doesn't automatically appear on my iTunes, fellas.

Can I brag a bit without sounding too ridiculous? I'm really glad you guys told the Strangers With Candy story.

Shortly after I had been given the Scharpling & Wurster cds as a gift, I also got Strangers With Candy on dvd. I am a comedy nerd, so I'm always looking in the background. Sean and I noticed the Rock Rot and Rule, but always wondered why David was associated with it. Confusing. But we were excited nonetheless. :)

This was great to hear. I recently heard an old 'episode' of "The Sound of Young America" (pretty sure that was the name) that featured Tom and Jon. It was from 2005, so it's cool to hear a more updated interview. I also heard the show that the "America's Radio Sweetheart" guy did after Mitch Hedberg passed away. The Best Show's dealings with that unfortunate occurrence was leaps and bounds more tasteful. I have to wonder if Tom's 'being called' "South America's Radio sweetheart" is pointed at all and if the Best Show episode was in 'response' to the other show. I mean, I don't know, I'm just speculated, maybe they're friends.

Tom and Jesse Thorn, America's Radio Sweetheart, are pals. He's been on TSOYA one (http://www.maximumfun.org/sound/scharpling.mp3) two (http://www.maximumfun.org/blog/2006/10/podcast-scharpling-wurster-2-3-05.html) three (http://media.libsyn.com/media/tsoya/tsoya111205.mp3) times.

I feel like a sap for believing the whole Sirius debacle. I mean, I believed there was going to be a move and there was legal disputes and that everything else (Toilet Talk, Tom crippled by sadness on the air, etc) was a joke. I didn't realize it was ALL a goof. YOU GOT ME TOM. YOU GOT ME.

Great job everyone!

Those are great, but I think Rodriguo is one of Jon's most underrated masterpieces...even the way he says "hello" at the beginning, with that ridiculous Franco-Cuban accent, just kills me every time i hear it.

I listened to this AST interview. It is very revealing, though I had the disquieting feeling throughout that I was listening to another loosely crafted bit. Like Tom was playing the character, Tom Sharpling, and Jon was playing the character, Jon Wurster. Fun interview, though. Jouster, you're one of my new heroes.

Thanks, Dave from Knoxville.  Like Tom said during the interview, I had beat the drum on the whole thing for a while, and I was really glad when it all came together, and came together so well.  Again, kudos to them for doing it.
