The Colossus Crawls West off of Mag Earwhig!, oh man.

How about "The Finest Joke is Upon Us"?  That song used to give me chills.

I know it's girly, but I love "Window of My World."

Some polished numbers are among my favorites: "Wings of Thorn" and "Asia Minor."

My fiancée finds "Kicker of Elves" to be very annoying.

My fiancée finds "Kicker of Elves" to be very annoying.

I have days where i'll be singing the chorus all day over and over under my breath and i won't know why

"awful bliss" is a favorite of mine.

Tractor Rape Chain is my favorite.

I love Tobin's GBV songs but have no patience for his solo albums.  I imagine this isn't an uncommon thing, but boy I love those GBV songs.

Game of Pricks from Alien Lanes is another underappreciated favorite. I also really love If We Wait from the split 7" with Jennie Mae. That might actually be my favorite GBV song. So many to choose from!

Damn straight.  Don't even get me started.

I saw GBV on the Alien Lanes Tour in the parking lot of RFK Stadium.  I've long since abandoned F5ing gbv.com, so I have no clue as to who this guy might have been, but before they started, this fat guy with a denim jacket and a budweiser walked up to Pollard's mike and started singing the theme to Happy Days:

1 2 3 O CLOCK 4 0 CLOCK ROCK

I remember thinking, gee, Pollard's hair is so curly.  He should grow it out.  Then he would be Townsend and Daltrey simultaneously.

alien lanes > bee thousand.
but then, both of those > most music that exists.

Do the Collapse is one of the most underrated albums of all-time. That's right, I said it.

What?  Actually, Do The Collapse is the one album I got no problem with saying I don't like, hands down.  There are some great songs on it, though, like "Things I Will Keep" is one of my favorite songs ever.  I also like "Mr. Buckles" quite a bit.  "Dragons Awake" on the other hand... Ew Boy.

More all-time faves:  "Drinker's Peace" off of King Shit and the Golden Boys.

Half Smiles has some awesome shit on it: "Sleepover Jack": "You're going to fuck up my make up.  You're going to make up my fuck up."  Awesome!  Also, "Asphyxiated Circle" is fucking crucial.  "Closets of Henry" makes me want to change my life.

I agree.  It has it's moments, but it's definitely not a contender for their best work ever.  Maybe because Pollard dropped his Hit-It-And-Quit-It esthetic?

BTW, when will Wuster call in as Ocasek?

I just came across the album at the right time in my high school years. It's probably my second favorite after Alien Lanes. I just think it gets some undeserved hate. How can an album have great songs on it and one of your favorite songs and not be good?

Because then there's all those other songs that stink on it.

Yeah I suppose. I still think it's underrated because all of those great songs get disregarded.

Choking Tara, creamy version
Tractor Rape Chain
Drag Days
Do the Earth
Jar of Cardinals

This is beginning to look like the GBV mixtape I made in 10th grade for a boy I liked!

"It's Like Soul Man" is GBV's "And Your Bird Can Sing."  Without audible inhales.  And I don't like it, etc. ....

This reminds me of a comment from another board I frequent in a thread titled "American chocolate - is really terrible!"  -

A co-worker has just got back from the "States" and come in with a bag full of really shite sweets.
Some malty choco calls called "Whopper", something called a butter finger, something called a musketeers.
All really bad.
jus tried some jelly looking, awful smelling thing called a "Twizlers" - Grammar is'n't very good in the USA either, as there was only one in the packet!
It's red and looks like it could be nice...on tasting however!!!!

Holy shite, what a shitty sweet selection from the country that bought us GBV.
Disapointed

My fave GBV song is "Faked Pulled Calf Muscle ('Cause I'm a Baby) [Frothy Version]".  It was an extremely rare release, only available to diehard fans who booked plane tickets to see the last leg of the last-ever Robert Pollard w/ The Ascended Master tour.

So I'm guessing this would be a bad time to mention Christian Animation Torch Carriers, even though I just did.

Earthquake Glue is the best of the post-lo fi era.

Although your assertion would seem an affront to my post about a track from Universal Truths and Cycles, I shall hesitate to disagree. My Son, My Secretary and My Country, I'll Replace You With Machines and She Goes Off At Night (Tracks 2,3 &4) are three (in a row!) that I wouldn't hesitate to list.

In fact, I think I just did.

I even think the Mix Up The Satellite/The Main Street Wizards/A Trophy Mule In Particular 1-2-3 punch is the highpoint of the album.

I agree with everything you said, although I think Sprout's Carnival Boy album is pretty good.

I still wish Robert Pollard used this record title at some point: The Worst Santini*

In defense of my culture, I hate all of those brands too.

But I love GBV.

"My Cool Son" aka "My Son Cool" (depending on what part of the vinyl Alien Lanes package you are looking at) kills me and leaves me wanting more. It's that whole GBV get-in/kill-it-flawlessly/get-out-without-another-run-at-it frustration. But the high I get from it rivals the pure uncontrollable possession, both-fists-in-the-air, eyes-squeezing-and-tearing, goosebump thrill of "Over The Neptune/Mesh Gear Box" I always, ALWAYS get, but ultimately takes second billing to it in Tim K's All-Time GBV Faves due to its relative brevity. "DE-CIDE NOW..." (blap-um blap-um blap-um blugga-da crash). I mean, shit, I got chills just thinking about it.

I forgot about Over the Neptune/Mesh Gear Fox. Great choice. That also reminds me of Quality of Armor, which is another of their best fully-formed songs. And I just remembered a couple more 7" stragglers - Dusted (Fast Japanese Spin Cycle version) and Dusty Bushworms (from Get Out of My Stations).

I'm always partial to "Of Mites And Men", which is a hidden blowout glammy gem at the end of EARTHQUAKE GLUE. It's the perfect second half of the one-two punch that starts with "Secret Star".

And to the guy who doesn't like American chocolate, DON'T EAT IT. That just leaves more for me and my fellow type two diabetics!

Tom.

Is there any more EPIC song under two minutes than The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory?  No, there is not.

An embryonic three minute version of this song, The Goldheart Festering Moon Directory, is like Pollard rocking this song out on electric guitar on a mountaintop for Zeus.

has anyone heard Capstan Shafts? i have 2 of his/their cdrs, and while i think it's really good stuff, it's just so totally ripping off mid-90s GBV, i feel like Bob and Tobin should sue for plagiarism.... but it's really good, so i shouldn't really complain.

I thought Capstan Jack was banned and would never be mentioned here again.
